South Tenerife has its decent spots. Beyond Costa Adeje and towards Playa Del Duque is very nice. Not chavvy or Theme park riddled.

Corralejo in Fuerteventura isn't up to much, but jesus god almighty what a beach.

You can also take the boat over to Lanzarote then go up the Volcano. Amazing.

I've done that twice in off season, not Brits abroad more an ex-pat Brexit voting sense of self entitlement pissed off that they can't get UK TV that easily for free.

Easy to avoid, just take in the stunning natural wonders.

I am leaning toward Madeira at the moment. I will mainly be hiking but will likely hire a moped and bomb around on that if I fancy going greater distances.

You said hiking!

Hiking = Madeira.

Be careful of your footing.
Our flight back looked like a UN pensioner airlift, slings and crutches everywhere.

Gran Canaria is not that warm in January is it?

I'd suggest Florida which I know fails the short-haul test. We've been quite frequent visitors but went for just a week in February, slightly worried we'd feel it was too much of a trek for such a short stay, but it absolutely wasn't. We didn't do any theme parks and largely chilled, swam and enjoyed the sun.

Out of school holiday season you'll get cheap flights, and you can pay as much or as little as you want for accommodation.

I imagine it would be a fair bit warmer than Gran Canaria is, if warmth is your thing.

However Florida CAN be cool in January. Not guaranteed beach weather.

South Tenerife has a reputation but it really is only Americas and to a certain extent Los Cristianos that are a bit downmarket, the rest is ok.
The North is totally different but the weather can be very different in the North, usually sunnier and warmer in the South.
Clampy said he wanted to tour and stuff so I would definitely choose Tenerife or Gran Canaria.
It's got Mount Tiede and forests and all sorts of stuff whereas the others are smaller with far less to see, I've been to Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.
Canaries are good for winter sun close by but I would never choose them for a summer holiday.
If you wanted to do something different there are one or two smaller islands you can get to.
Truth is I don't like them very much.

Hello you lovely lot!

Looking to get away , pref short (ish) haul in mid jan for ten days or so. But would love some sunshine and heat. Any ideas? Flexible on price, flights and duration.
So far I thought Gran Canaria as it has the warmth. Any personal recommendations and why?

Cheers!

Another vote for Fuertaventura - although our best 'winter sun' holiday was to The Gambia a few years back - certainly a lot warmer than The Canaries at that time of year.

From what I know the weather on the Canary Islands can be hit and miss meaning you can have alot of cloud.Other places like Dubai guarantee sun.

Went to my place in Cornwall in the end. Disappointing but work schedule was rearranged. Weather was frankly awful but after an intense December, any break was most welcome. And in certain landscapes, inclement weather can hold it’s own appeal.
Got some locked in leave in March so thinking Gran Canaria or Madeira. Which do you think?

Pretty much slap bang between St Ives and Penzance, so quite far down. Nearest conurbation is a very small place called Gulval. I’m off the beaten track. Lovely for a few days but bit remote, especially “off season”.

Can I ask, why the interest?

Yes my extended family are Cornish born and bred and I use to spend a lot of time down there especially when I was based at HMS Seahawk in the early 90’s.

Must be nice luxury to have a second home you can pop off to for a bit of R & R?
