Hello you lovely lot!

Looking to get away , pref short (ish) haul in mid jan for ten days or so. But would love some sunshine and heat. Any ideas? Flexible on price, flights and duration.
So far I thought Gran Canaria as it has the warmth. Any personal recommendations and why?

Cheers!

Live in Tenerife during winter and after 5 years have only had to sit inside to eat 6 times (rain). Very dry, wind (in SW of Island) negligible, unlike east of Island and Islands to the East and temp range of 17 (night) 22 day is standard

Another vote for Cape Verde. The African Caribbean. Bit windy though so move to the other side of the island.About an 8 hour flight, is that too long?

Thanks for the public put down, bit disappointed it's been so long since the last.

Eh?

Tenerife does have a questionable reputation very much in line with what you wrote.

Frankly, I thought exactly the same before North Tenerife was recommended to me a couple of years ago. I've not been myself, but I read enough at the time to understand that my opinion was wrong.

The South may be a haven of fry-ups, pints of Fosters in the Red Lion and the like, but the North is a world away from that.

No need to try and deflect from your mistake - many people make the same (including, as above, me until recently). Hope this helps.

Not feeling too guilty about my carbon footprint on this one as it'll be my first time on a plane for 4 years. Been working flat out for two years, 7, 8, 9 + night shifts in a row overtime and now it's time to slow down and enjoy a couple of weeks away. Walking, eating, relaxing. Heaven!!! So thanks again. All of your ideas look spot on, just gotta choose now :)
Bozza 's suggestion of Florida sounds very nice but will have to put that aside for next year I think. I'm going solo so just fancy getting somewhere quick and being in a place I can explore on my todd.

Another Vote for Madeira, Mrs Jakarta and I went there in February Half Term and it was delightful, had just come from a week working in snowy Lincolnshire. Funchal does get a bit crowded on days when the Cruise Ships dock. Agree about the stray dogs, amazing amounts of them. If you get a decent Hotel you swim in the Pool, I tried the Sea once only but even that around the same as the Channel in High Summer. If you hire a car keep to the main roads, especially don't use the old roads up in the Mountains as I did. Mrs J said my knuckles turned white on a few of the Valley Passes.

I am leaning toward Madeira at the moment. I will mainly be hiking but will likely hire a moped and bomb around on that if I fancy going greater distances.

If you end up in Playa del Ingles and see someone eating Gammon in Mulligans,it might well be me.Usually about mid-20's temperature-wise,with a nice breeze.

Fuertaventura or Lanzarote are just as good, going to Lanzarote in February

Warning, the sea is flipping cold in February

Hmmm I did a lot of research when we went last year and I believe tenerife and gran canaria are much warmer than fueteventura and lanzarote at that time of year? We went to Los Cristianos in the first week of February and it was ~26-28oC every day and the sea was lovely and warm.

Have you purchased a place or do you rent?

Yup. Was a bit worried when we went but was presently surprised by the standard of local cuisine etc. Though would avoid Las Americas

Bits of Las Americas are tatty much like bits of Brighton and indeed any city in the world. 10 mins to the south Adeje and into La Caleta are absolutely idyllic. Further up to Los Gigantes and over Masca to Buenavista is some of the most dramatic landscape you will see.

Agree there is the usual tat to be found here but there's much to discover for anyone looking for more than an English breakfast and a sun lounger
