Would be very surprised if we bought more than a couple of players that are ready to go straight into the PL matchday squad…..just not what we do.
maybe but we’ve never been in europe before and we have no idea how far we will go in the cup.

RDZ will want to compete on all fronts for as long as possible. we currently don’t have the capacity for that, so it’s either buy the capacity/quality in or make a choice where we want to focus, which i doubt the manager will want to do. my point being, we’re in entirely uncharted territory here

Do we know we can't bring back loanees?

Because it strikes me that we need bodies back in before the international tournaments start in mid Jan. That won't be easy to do with signings. I don't remember us ever signing a player in the first week of Jan and getting him playing straight away.

If we have loanees back we can plug the gap at the time they need to be plugged, not a few weeks after

Which loanees are out there who would 'plug the gaps'? Alzate perhaps, though RDZ doesn't seem to fancy him (nor, IIRC, did Potter). Undav? Is he willing to come back from Germany? Moran - doing OK in the Championship, so just possibly maybe, but it's a big, big leap - and is he any more than on a par with Hinshelwood? Our other Championship loanees aren't pulling up trees, and loanees below that level? Surely not.

Kai Wagner on a free from Philadelphia Union seems the most likely signing for me. We don’t spend much in January as a rule, but a back-up left back on a free with impressive assist numbers seems logical.

Think we’ve been linked briefly, too.

For this season, I think we need a RB & LB (suggestions made by the OP seem sensible) and possibly another winger/attacker to cover the losses of Julio (fingers crossed he will be back by Jan but would be handy if he wasn't having to be rushed), Welbz and Solly. When I say 'need', I mean in order to have a chance of finishing in the top 8 IMO.

Chances are we will need replacements for Mitoma, Lallana, Welbeck, Perv, Ansu Fati, Milner and maybe Fergie within the next 18 months, would be good to get this process in a better position sooner rather than later, but I would be very surprised to see more than one join the first team squad in Jan, as we all know Tone generally doesn't do business in this window. I'd imagine Koslowski and Sarmiento are seen as players that will be involved in the first team next season, but not sure there are any others from the loan crew. Moran maybe? Hopefully Moder can cover the gap in the middle. Maybe Sima could come back to give us another option? Don't think we would be able to bring Undav back if Stuttgart have a future fee option but not sure on that one.

A couple that might be ready for next season to be loaned back until the summer and one more quality first team addition would be great though. I think most of us acknowledge that qualifying for Europe again will be tough but it's very fine margins and one more player in could make all the difference in the league, and in Europe, as we will still be in some form of European competition by Jan barring an absolute disaster.

A full back and a centre mid would be my preference, previously our attack was heavily reliant on having a full back who could overlap the winger, doesn’t matter whether it’s the left or right, by losing that we’ve lost the ability to outnumber the opposition. Obviously Pervis is excellent at that, as is Tariq when he’s available, Milner and Veltman just don’t have the pace to be threatening. A centre mid is, for me, a huge must, we’re three months into the season and I still don’t see anything that resembles a starting midfield, we need consistency, ideally another ball winning type, it seems all too easy for the opposition the drive through the middle of us, Baleba is too raw just now to be the centre piece of the team. If we shore up the middle and add an attacking full back the goals will soon return.

Another new set of injuries/suspensions this weekend.

As much as he does not like doing business in January, I don’t think Tony will have any choice but to splash the cash in 5 weeks time.

Yesterday, we ended the match with one fit fullback and one fit winger. This is not sustainable.

We might now get found out very badly in some of our many December fixtures.

Yup. Could really do with getting a FB signing done ahead of the window opening. Jan is going to be difficult with losing Mitoma and AFCON players, perhaps not Tariq now, potentially Baleba, while Adingra ought to be a certainty. We don't have too many fixtures in Jan, so it's not as bad as some fear but we could do with Ivory Coast failing to get Adingra back.

Plus Buonanotte.

The kind of player we sign in the January window is pretty clear, this is the list of players we've spent money on in January.

23/24 - Mazilu
22/23 - Buonanotte, Ayari
21/22 - Kozlowski, Undav
20/21 - Caicedo
19/20 - Lamptey
18/19 - MacAllister, Mlakar, Baluta

The last big-money-straight-to-the-first-team-january-signing was Locadia in 17/18

Perhaps more interesting are the loan recalls we've done in January, of players getting their first call into the first team squad, which include MacAllister, Moder, Caicedo and Tau. Could this year see Kozlowski get a call?

I’m not quite sure if he is going to get to the right level we need.

His team were destroyed 5-0 by Akpom & co last weekend:

He is in and out of the starting line-up in a poor team.

Still only 20 but he has a lot to do in a position where we have fit players and depth.

Yeah, maybe, i don't know. I do know that Caicedos team in Belgium were also bottom of the league when he came to us in January 2022, all depends on whether they think the player is ready to be around the brighton first team as the next step in his development.

A left back seems certain and I wouldn’t be surprised if we snapped up a defensive midfielder. Other than that I can’t see much business being done but it does depend on how bad Welbeck’s injury is

I may be wrong but I don't think clubs are obliged to release players for the Olympic events like they are senior international games and tournaments, FIFA changed the rules before the Rio games in 2016.

When Mac Allister went to both the Olympic qualifiers (which delayed him joining the squad after we ended his loan at Boca Juniors) and the Olympic games itself (which meant he missed some of pre-season and could have meant he'd return to the squad just before the start of the season but Argentina went out in the group stage) the club only agreed to it as he really wanted to go and the club wanted to keep him happy. It worked long term as he sang the praises of the club when talking about how they looked out for his interests etc.

Now I'm fairly certain Buonanotte will go if called up as he' still only a bit part player this season. However it comes at a time we will lose a few more established payers including our two first choice wingers as things stand. So we could want to keep him back as he's another body at a time when we are struggling for bodies and are going to be even more shorthanded unless a few recover from injury soon.
