We lost a pair of cockatiels several years ago. My wife thought it would be nice to sit them out on the porch one summers day - not realising she had left the cage door open. We never saw them again.

I managed to convince her and our young boy that they would have found a nice place to live elsewhere, feeding from one of the millions of millet trees you see up every street, or sunflowers that adorn every other garden.

In truth we kind of knew they would have been lucky to survive the night, and probably had their eyes pecked out by seagulls or crows. We coped by never talking about it.
