It’s a big deal to the person being abused. If one bellend out of the billions on line posts something racist is it really that big a deal? We are striving for perfection if so, ain’t going to happen. Ignore the knobhead and don’t bring attention to him/her. Could be Russian or North Korean or anyone anywhere in the world given PL reach
Is it? Really? In context of 9billion people majority of whom can insult anyone anywhere at anytime on this planet? I would honestly just ignore if I was in the public eye on a global stage. I wouldn’t make it my mission to correct and educate the stupid. No one’s done it in several millennia never mind a lifetime. The internet gives voice to these knobheads. I wouldn’t play to their pathetic natures. It’s a big deal to the person being abused.
but if you ignore this then others feel emboldened and post more of the same. You either just give up and let the racists, homophobes, mysogonists, et al have their way, or you clamp down and do whatever you can to stop it.If one bellend out of the billions on line posts something racist is it really that big a deal? Yes.If one bellend out of the billions on line posts something racist is it really that big a deal?
Having been the subject of homophobic abuse on a personal level, I would say why should I just put up with it, or why should anyone/ Have you ever been the subject of vile abuse, shouted at you, sent to you via the internet, spat at, etc?Is it? I get your point, but I don’t think it embolds others necessarily. Nor is it endemic or institutional. Plenty of culprits still. But nothing like what it once once half a century ago. Not in 2022. And besides, if you’re that stupid, you’re that stupid. Ain’t nothing gonna change that. So I would choose to ignore them in meantime as said rather than take on trying to correct Twitter, Facebook and feed the trolls etc. That is a monumental task after all, and perpetrators are all over the planet not necessarily within our own borders.but if you ignore this then others feel emboldened and post more of the same. You either just give up and let the racists, homophobes, mysogonists, et al have their way, or you clamp down and do whatever you can to stop it.
Im pretty sure if you ask almost any black player they will tell you that it isnt just one, its multiple and constant. Its personal and goes direct to the player and is probably seen by their wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, kids, parents and friends
You just need to look at the abuse after the Euro final, or Rashfords comments, or Zahas to name just three examples. Its not just one bellend, is endemic institutonal racism and by ignoring it, and saying let it go, you are just simply enabling the racists
Are you really asking this of a fellow Brighton fan? Really?!! But even if I wasn’t, the answer is still of course I have, you’d have led a very charmed life if you hadn’t. You kind of prove my point though, you will simply never rid this world completely of these morons. It’s the easiest most causal thing to do, send anonymous digital abuse. That’s why I’d ignore it if I was a global mega star. Very different if someone comes up to you in the street (of course, cowards didn’t and won’t) But some sunshine starved simpleton firing texts from their basement bedroom? Nah, I’d not even give them the satisfaction.Having been the subject of homophobic abuse on a personal level, I would say why should I just put up with it, or why should anyone/ Have you ever been the subject of vile abuse, shouted at you, sent to you via the internet, spat at, etc?
Are you seriously suggesting that we just simply ignore all the racism, homophobia, sexism and just let those perpetrators get away with it? Thats what is seems you are saying
Of course crimes aren’t all treated the same. In perfect world we’d have a justice system that had capacity. The ease of which millions or billions can send abuse over the net is why I’d simply ignore it if I was a global mega star like Toney. Very different if happened in the ground, on the street, in a public place etc. But of course these cyber warriors are too cowardly on the whole to do this and or don’t get out much probably anyhow. They like the anonymity of the Net. It’ll never end, too many haters in this world. Switching off from is easier than trying to track and trace people all over the world and bring to justice. Unless of course they’re so stupid they can be easily traced to Newcastle and are within our police’s reach.Yes.
Do you also apply this to other crimes?
We do, of course, have a few idiot fans (that Zaha song, FFS) but not a lot of out and out racists. The NSK guys are quite left leaning. Brighton and, increasingly, Worthing are places that are left leaning as a whole (which is why the tone of this site politically can be out of step with the nation). And we certainly don't do homophobia.Of course it does! If anyone thinks that Albion fans are holier than thou when it comes to racism they are seriously deluded. Why, just because it's the club that we all support, should our fans be any different?

No, I wouldn’t because, as stated, two different situations (online v in reality) although depending on their size I would think about from a self preservation perspective!it’s wrong full stop. It’s no different to subjecting someone to racist/homophobic abuse in the street. If you do it then you take the consequences. Ignoring it basically gives it the green light, if you were you in a pub and someone started giving some racist/homophobic abuse would you just ignore it on the assumption they are an idiot. Social media is a very powerful tool and can cause carnage if abused.
It's not two different situations, we need to stop this excusing things that happen "online" as not being in reality. There is still a human being reading the words typed and being hurt etc by them, just because it's online doesn't lessen the impact on the victim. This cretin would never have used those words to Ivan Toney's face, he's hiding behind the keyboard and thinking he's untouchable, he isn't and people like him need to be made an example of.No, I wouldn’t because, as stated, two different situations (online v in reality) although depending on their size I would think about from a self preservation perspective!
Like it or not, a degree of practicality exists in so far as online comments do more often than not go unpunished - because it’s impossible to police someone the other side of the world in a rogue state perhaps making such comments. That’s all I’m saying. Nobody’s condoning. Just accepting someone making a comment online isn’t the same as someone using racist language in person. That’s completely different situation and one that can immediately be dealt with. In his situation if 10000 people make online comments then I wouldn’t my waste time going around trying to arrest these persons. I’d just switch ‘em off. Because I literally have the power to do that. It's not two different situations, we need to stop this excusing things that happen "online" as not being in reality. Head in the sand. You let these tossers do this on line and next thing is that they’ll be saying down the pub and at footy games.Like it or not, a degree of practicality exists in so far as online comments do more often than not go unpunished - because it’s impossible to police someone the other side of the world in a rogue state perhaps making such comments.
