It kinda shows just how much of a factor Gus was in signing players. Oscar doesn't have much of a reputation of his own to sell to potential targets and may really struggle to even get first contact with the sort of players Gus managed to sign.

Convincing the likes of Kuzszcak, Bruno, Upson, Bridge, Crofts, Hammond, Orlandi, LuaLua, Vicente, Dobbie, Ulloa, David to drop down from playing in their retrospective top flights to play for Brighton was quite something. We cannot be an easy club to sell to players

New Stadium, new training complex, 28,000 to 30,000 home crowds, great place to live! Yeh your right must be a very hard sell!!!!!

In what context? We've been at the top end of the Championship for two seasons, have a new stadium with 25k+ attendances each week and as of next season a brand spanking new training ground. Assuming the wage offer is equal I can't see what exactly would be a hard sell about it.

Oscar is not complaining about anything. He is saying when in other countries people managed the budget for him and brought players and sorted it all out he just trained the players. He is saying this is new for him to have such control and therefore he is learning something new

He doesn't have control. Thats David Burkes job. Its a bollox argument everyone's making.

Fans in "being hypocritical defending/ignoring the actions of someone they like that they'd slaughter someone they don't like for doing" shocker.

Not at all.

Hopefully Oscar will never get to the point of continually moaning about the budget etc. in public, but if he did I suspect he would get just as much criticism.

Oscar's comments are taken in context, as were Gus'.

We've never been in the premiership and a lot of agents won't be interested. Gus had a style of play which people were used to so joining him they knew they could play football and be a part of something. Oscar doesn't have the same reputation yet so will probably find it hard to attract players

Oscar has very good contacts though at the top of the game and at some very big European clubs, including Chelsea and Man City in this country.

It's not all bad.

Ha ha - now let's see if those Gus haters that have said he shouldn't have moaned about the budget give the same treatment to Oscar - I lay a hefty sum they don't !!!
We'd argue like cat and dog if we ever met in the real world, I can't remember agreeing with a single thing that you have ever written on here.

I appreciate his honesty - and for me it does say that the budget we have in a market that is refusing to lower its prices does not make it super-simple to trade for players at the level we'd like them - but i am not a fan of statements saying "normally someone else does this." He was hired to do this job and presumably such matters were discussed in the process of him being chosen. He's cool, calm and collected, but being a manager nowadays, it seems, means being a persuader too, a marketeer of selling a product to those they're looking to bring on board. I hope he is that. Maybe, in fact, with this Godfather stylings, a simple glance at any desired player should coerce them into a cowering state of agreement and adoration.

Christ on a bike, let it go. This is sooooo boring now.

You, Westedene Wonder, Glasfryn.... all the others who want Gus canonised really need to get over it. He's gone, not coming back. Adieu. Farewell. Move on, the rest of us have.
Errrmmm! excuse me
you will if you ever bothered to look know from most of my posts that he (Gus) along with the rest in that bloody fiasco were and as far as I am concerned will never be TRUSTED again
you may of coarse be confusing the fact that I seek the TRUTH of that bloody fiasco, everybody, the World and its Auntie seem to be in the know but never will they reveal that so called TRUTH because it was passed on by some no mark gossip at the club who obviously has it in for our ex-manager.
just a bit of fairness, some balance in the argument would be nice
I don't want Gus back
the new guy is doing a good job
until of coarse he upsets someone

Would anyone in their right mind really want Gus back? He's very much yesterday's man for me. I'll always remember the good times he gave us with fondness; the other things that happened left a bad taste in the mouth so I'd prefer to forget them.

As has been pointed out of the original thread, in context of the article this is taken from, Oscar is saying that it's not been easy to adjust to being actively involved in the recruitment / budget juggling. He's not seemingly complaining about the size of the budget.

This

Poyet used to whine about the budget at every opportunity.

And this.

So? it was clearly a ploy to downplay expectations.

You don't go into a transfer window declaring "We are so RICH". Teams will automatically double the price of their players once approached and fans expectations would go through the roof.

I still can't understand how some people don't get this.

You want to sell a player and you value him at £1m. West Brom come in. You will accept £1m. Man Utd come in? You ask for £2m based on their financial ability.

It's just common sense. I don't CARE that fans got annoyed by it. I don't care what his interviews said. I only cared about the team on the pitch before my eyes and, on the whole, Gus got a VERY good team together for a reasonable price. All fine by me.

This is just so wrong. I can assure you TB, not just many, many fans, got increasingly frustrated by Gus' ridiculous budget pronouncements (the latter being an ungrateful fool).

In the last five-six months of a 3 and a half year stay. BY which point it seems to be accepted knowledge that the personal relationship had broken down

True. So Gus started behaving like a spoiled brat.

snip...snip...

Whenever there's a Gus thread, you're there. Someone criticises Gus, you're there and attacking the poster. Someone defends Paul Barber/the club regarding Gus...see previous. I fail to see how any of your posts, bearing in mind you say you are completely in the dark over this, provide any counterweight/fairness. It really is time to move on.

in the dark ...yes
and so are those that apparently know what has gone on otherwise they might post what they are supposed to know
its not if someone criticizes Gus its the way it is done without any fairness at all
you will not find a post where I have criticized anyone in this fiasco as I have said before I would not Trust ANYONE OF THEM, Gus,Tony, Paul, not any one as far as I could throw them.
you are right it is time to move on
I have
a long time ago
when I realized that that football as a whole including my home City club are all involved in a very muddy business

"Only heard one side...."

'sake. It's hardly even that. Rumours and hints and nods on an internet forum and that's it. We've heard nothing officially from either side on the reasons for the sacking. Stop pretending that you're providing an important service to Gus or whatever it is that you think you're doing. There's no automatic entitlement for us fans to know any of this. He's gone. You really should move on.
