I don’t like Grealish, particularly, ……… but I would have had him in the starting line up and definitely had him taking a penalty if he wanted to.

Italy the better side , thats football. If we had got the 2nd when they were on the ropes everytime we went forward then suspect we'd have been ok.

As it was it took the best team in the tournament penalties / luck to win.

Massive success , things to learn and improve but we are serious contenders to win competitions at the moment.

Fair do's. But they were only better because we didn't press them high enough up the pitch and let them dominate midfield.

Absolutely…. But I think that was caused by several at best average performances in the first 20 mins of the second half.

Gave the ball up time and time again and handed the momentum to the Italians.

The fact Saka had zero impact when he came on showed it was more about a struggling performance against a strong side than a personnel one i thought.

Still I do agree Southgate made some mistakes last night, however he was part of the problem rather than the whole cause.

Nope. I'd rather we lost 3-1 giving it a go than on pens. Kane was spent and shouldn't of been on the pitch in extra time. He got it wrong, and he knows it.

if manager plays defensive football to be accepted they have to succeed. eg Moreino sorry about spelling ,Palace and Burnley managers. Many managers including Norwich have failed but are beyond criticism because of how they played.
If Man City manager was in charge of that England squad appreciate chance we would not have got to final but last night game could have ended 3-2/3-1 either way. He would not have been criticised

I'm not sure, I suspect not. I wonder if there was a sense of saving the experienced players for sudden death? Though you still think you'd want the experienced players taking the first and last of the 5 as they'd be the most high pressure, and if you wanted to protect the younger less experienced put them in the 2/3/4 positions.

That's a very basic way of analysing any game of football. I'm pretty sure most people that watched that game would agree that Italy were the dominant team and the one most likely to go on and win. You're right in that subs and change of tactics could make a difference and that is where we fell down, that and the selection and order of penalty takers.

They outclassed us from the moment savvy Mancini took that fresh coaching time-out half way through the first half (faux Jorginho injury).

Thereafter, England player sucked back including Kane and Sterling acting as additional DM’ers.

The de facto 11 man defence, an excellent Pickford, just letting in the single goal.

Great analysis on various radio stations today - Mancini won the battle of tactics with Barella, Jorginho and Veratti owning our CM.

Southgate isn't liked by many people here because of his previous association to another club and is often criticised by some for his style of play, but it's hard to find a manager with a better record over their last two major tournaments.

I like Southgate. A decent human being and there is much to be admired, but he is much too cautious in his approach. He sets up not to lose and we stayed like that until extra time. If he can change that mind set then he would have a chance.

Care to name a manager with a negative approach who became an attack minded one?

Not going to happen, we are pragmatic England for the foreseeable

Southgate is clearly a very nice guy but he’s dull, like his approach to football

Feels like "just got back from the match", and not too far from the truth. Transport getting home was non-existent, and a catalogue of bad decisions meant a 4am home, having begged lift in the end.

Great day out though. Just frustrating watching us just let them have the ball. No pressure on them from 2nd half onwards. Get in shape and defend the positions we thought they were going to play. As soon as we get the ball, it was a hurried "quick" out ball, which was inevitably lost, and we go again. 1 min their possession, as we sit off, followed by 5 seconds of our possession, where we desperately look for a killer route 1 ball, that is lost. Hurray back into 5-3-1. Just needed to get our foot on the ball. We have good passers, just didn't seem to show up yesterday. So frustrating. Anyway, first time we have lost a final?
