[Albion] IT help needed - the Albion website

cost of supporting content on a website, once you have one, is negligable. the driver is you can control access better with a mobile app, and phone users better conditioned to pay for incremental services. look forward to more premium services in the future.

This. Seems to me that the strategy is to coerce the fan base on to the smartphone app, then monetise the app (sell ads, offer an ad-free service etc etc)

Great! The match galleries, the press review - and apparantly the match commentaries - are now going to be 'Apps exclusive', whatever that means.

I registered for MyAlbionTV so I can (could?) listen to the commentaries - but now apparantly I have to update my App on IOS (if I've got one) or unload the old one and uplaoad the new one if I'm on Android. I've no idea if I'm either, and have never knowingly downloaded an App in my life.
I use Google via Firefox on my laptop - and there's nothing in the 'instructions' on the Albin site that helps me.

Can some kind soul please explain to me in English words I know how to get this new 'improved'(?) service?

(Yes, I have tried turning it off and turning it on again - and have heard all the other hilarity that some find in lack of IT skills! Not that that will stop it coming, but seriously, any help will be appreciated.)

Not sure where it told you about updating apps as there is no mention of any apps on the audio commentary page linked above.

I'm specifically saying it's not available on laptops - I'm assuming tablets do about the same thing in the same way (I've never used one)?

The Supporter services at the club obviously don't find it at all confusing, because they immediately understood my query and replied. Not entirely comforted, but could be worse.

Hopefully the information he's been given about the live commentary is correct. The second bit I take to mean the the people with the posh phones will be able to view the App exclusive features and videos as soon as they come out, and the rest of us plebs will have to wait a few days for the privilege! As someone suggested earlier, I wonder if it will eventually lead to montorising the de luxe version ....................

I didn't ask about the U23 live streams - but as they're on Youtube I hope they'll be OK. It'll be a real disappointment - even to smart phone owners - if the only way to watch them would be on little screens.

If you click on the 'Latest News' page (which is where I go to find the Match Centre page on matchdays), you will see that some of the links are marked 'App exclusive'.

Three out of four are, in fact. One of the benefts listed for downloading the App was 'LIVE matchday commentary' - causing me to have a concern that when the link came up on Matchday it too would become 'App exclusive'. According to Supporter Services, as far as they know this won't be the case; hopefully they're right!

Honestly there are plenty of solutions that serve both apps and the web. It's not realistically more expensive, you get much better usability, and if you go app only you absolutely kill visibility on search engines. Much as I don't really love it, clubs (particularly Premier League clubs) are brands and optimising for search engines is genuinely important and a potential revenue driver. Most places are actually moving back away from app designs and towards reactive websites that scale appropriately for any device.

I wonder how many people will now say that they have purchased smart phones solely to view the app exclusive content, and are now not happy that the content is not app exclusive, and they could have carried on viewing via the website.

Clearly the communication of these changes have been poorly handled by the Albion, as unless it's hidden away somewhere there has been no detailed communication on these changes.

Just smacks of getting the number of downloads of the app up, so that revenue rates can be increased.

You mean the platform they already support ? i.e. the website ? I can't see them removing the website so a few minutes to upload the video doesn't seem over the top. The video file will be the same for all platforms. It's very short sighted to stop uploading to the website.

I’m not an expert on this at all but I do remember reading something about how music videos can be fiddled with for optimization on different platforms and devices. I presume it’s the same for football? Maybe someone who works in this area can explain to us?

Thanks - I've no idea what that means, but I'll follow it up tomorrow and see where it gets me!

..........and possibly, as already suggested, more information to be garnered and monetorised. PB really does want to know your inside leg measurement before you're anywhere within a country mile of Albion PLC, perhaps? (asking for a friend.................)
