as no one has voted for:-

Yes - My mail-order-bride needs her VISA.

I can only assume certain NSCers haven't voted on this poll yet.

I'm divorced with 2 kids. Split in AUg 2004 and saw someone for about 9 months or so. Luckily me and my ex still get on OK, even though she's remarried (and still not really happy).

I am very content and enjoy my life. I would like to meet someone where we add to each others lives. I see so many people who are in relationships and they are clearly not happy, but are either trapped for one reason or another, or are too scared to be 'alone'.

I now feel as though when I meet someone, I will have a better idea of judging whether we can get on. Looks aren't everything (Ok, I need to feel attracted to them), but it's more important about compatability. So many of the really attractive women are full of their own importance; beautiful on the outside, ugly on the inside - not for me thanks.

When I got divorced, I thought that I would never want to get married again, but if things were right with someone, I now know that I would.

True love. He's been saddled with since the age of 14.

And while I can understand why, I think it's sad when people stay in loveless marriages/relationships for the sake of the children, finances, housing etc.

No kids at home
We're both skint
We can both do better (especially her)
My mail-order-bride was damaged in transit

And it was our Silver Anniversary a couple of days ago.

Someone who'll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She'll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She will hear me out
And won't easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she'll offen disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me
I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and with every breath
Someone who'll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don't want to be tied
To anyone's strings
I'm carefully trying to steer clear
Of those things
But when I'm asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly

Been with Mrs.Kraay since I was 18 years old and we met in my first term at University. That was almost 18 years ago. Been married for 12 of them.

My friend from America wants to get married in order to move to the UK to work. She feels nothing for the guy she would be marrying but he loves her.

I've told her she is utterly mad to do this. Marrying someone you don't love just for convenience is crazy.

Not really when you consider how easy divorce is.

Marriage is pretty worthless all told (although not pointless, clearly).

Married for 7 years and two lovely children to show for it. All marriages have their ups and downs but if you chuck in the towel at the first argument then you obviously weren't right for each other.

Forgive me, I don't know the rules about visas and marriage and stuff...but if you marry a Brit just to work here then get divorced soon afterwards won't the authorities be suspicious? Will questions be asked anyway? She seems to think marrying this guy is the answer to all her problems.

really...on what do you base that gem?

Call me a skeptic, but, other than a tax break, I'm not sure what it is marriage gains a couple. Is there anything you can do as a married couple that you can't do as a non-married couple? Let's forget for a moment the "We're in love and we want to show the world!" aspect. A) The world couldn't give a shit. B) It's irrelevant.

While being a legally binding contract, (easily annulled) the whole construct of being "married" ultimately appears pretty pointless (so long as you discount visa benefits, of course).
