Is this an attack on the Working Class?

A direct quote form that shitty piece of journalism: "there seems to be a narrative of an cultured metropolitan class wondering what to do with its young men." That is certainly not a reference to the middle-class male.
...the word 'cultured', and the possessive 'its' would see any semi educated reader taking the opposite view in my opinion.

Sadly Thatcher killed the working class in the eighties :(

Nowt left to attack.

That's pretty much what I came here to say.

If it's an attack on anything, I thought it was one on the societal conditions that have created such vain and vacuous people. I don't think class really came into it. I must admit, I'd never personally found this type of character particuarly working class, just anti-intellectual, apolitical and selfish.

Don't know what the fuss is about. The writer's achieved what he set out to do i.e. kick up a fuss and get noticed/discussed. The words don't really matter, it's the same vacuous claptrap Julie Burchill's been trotting out by rote for decades. Job done!

I cannot be arsed to read this thread but Vice used to be funny, very funny and poked fun at white trash...it's what it did. It lost it's edge years ago though as the link demonstrates.

Fairly ignorant comment about the Guardian. I don't think this bloke is a particularly frequent contributor and, even if he were, the Guardian uses a wide range of columnists with a wide range of views and interests. There isn't a "typical Guardian Columnist", if that is what you are trying to imply.

And for the record, I thought the article was fairly tedious. If I had come across it in the Guardian, I would not have bothered reading it.

He isnt as far as I know. And as an aside Tony Benn's kids went to comp school as well. Buzzer is not having a very good day with his anti-left rants :lolol:

Thanks for saving me the bother of checking about the schooling of Tony Benn's kids. I have Holland park Comprehensive in my mind, but haven't had time to check it. I don't post things on here without being fairly sure of my facts.

Is the right answer - though at least Hilary moved there from the private Prep school Westminster Under.

Can you provide some dates. From what I can find on the web his 4 children only Hilary seems to have attended a private school which he left at the age of 10. If this is the case, then suggesting his children attended private schools, is disingenuous.

?? Mine and DiS point is that he is not a regular Guardian writer. I'm not sure what this link is meant to show?

It's his Guardian profile. It shows that he writes for the Guardian and fairly regularly at that. 6 articles in less than 7 months and the latest only a few weeks back. Try reading the links before posting. Just ask yourself next time, what would Dave have done?

What does it matter if his children attended private schools or not?

There is a lot of nonsense spoken suggesting that those who would like to see a truly comprehensive system of education offering the best to all children are somehow hypocritical if they don't send their own children to a comprehensive school.

That's akin to suggesting that someone who campaigns for improvement in a failing local hospital is hypocritical if they elect to attend a different hospital when they need treatment.

So you agree that he sent Hilary to a private school?

I did read the link; I guess we will have to agree to disagree on what we call regular.

I'll be honest; think you're clutching at straws on this thread. One kid up to age of 10 out of 4 is tenuous. And 7 articles in 6 months is not regular in my mind. Unless the information changes I will stick to my belief.
