Is the Amex big enough?

This is a really crazy thread. When they first built the stadium, Hull had exactly the same bounce in attendances. Five years later, after a couple of seasons in the Premier League, you hear them on the radio talking about "there's not much atmosphere in this half empty ground". We averaged 18 - 20,000 after the first season in the First Division. I fear already that the Amex will be like the Reebok in a few years time, with large gaps. It's great at the moment, but please don't be fooled into thinking there's not some novelty involved. 30k is OK for the Premier League and with our current demand, in a few years time with the Championship average of 14 - 15,000, I won't surprised if the finished Amex will not be too big already. In the short term, it's great, in the long term, we are not bigger than (let's say) Leeds United, which some people seem to be suggesting we are. Yes, we had over 30,000 a few times (I was there for a couple of them), but not often.

Actually according to Wikipedia: 'Brighton and Hove's urban area has a population of over 450,000 people'

All Lancashire towns with tiny catchment areas compared to ours.

Good point, they are all in a few miles of each other and also near Utd and City. But all proper working class towns with strong football history (excluding Wigan the Rugby League capital of the world) so you would expect higher proportion of population to go to games than in Sussex.

I am going by our past attendances. We did not get 30,000 regularly, we never have. Just for the odd big game - probably only ever 4 - 5 times ever. Our average in the First Division was under 20,000 by the time we were relegated. We'll have the 30,000 stadium, and I'm happy we have, but lets see what attendances are like in 10 - 15 years time, when we are not playing so well.

And when Arsenal used to get 18k crowds at Highbury in the 1980s for some top flight games. You cannot compare old times with now.

I think the capacity will be just about right at 30k. Look at Wolves - just increased their capacity and been relegated.

These obviously space for a small addition to the stadium capacity with the gap between SE corner and the stadium shell and the space above the platforms in the ESU...Surely these a thousand or two there!? :amex: :bhasign:

Anythings possible with the right amount of money I suppose.

I thought someone said a while back that the pitch can be lowered to make space at the 'bottom' of the stadium.

I heard this as well - not exactly sure how that would work unless you also made the pitch smaller...?!

Let's face facts...back in the 60s/70s we had standing room in the grounds...come the Bellotti revolution and the demise of the Goldstone we lost a lot of the younger fans due to travelling to Gillingham. If prices get much higher we will have less and less supporters as will other clubs.

If we ever get 30k for four or five consecutive seasons (I don't think we will even come close) let's then discuss whether we can expand further. This is a completely pointless debate right now.

If the aim of expanding the Amex would be to generate more revenue, then the same end could be achieved by making tickets more expensive. Not advocating that for a second, mind. Obviously.
