I'm not the owner of a football club or of a football manager recruitment agency - so why would I know?

As have said elsewhere and ALL OVER THIS THREAD, I certainly wouldn't sack GPott but be seriously concerned that managing the Albion in the Premier League gets near identical results from men with completely different ethos.

I've said before that walking away from Hughton games I used to just feel almost sedated by the dullness of the football with a resigned 'eh, what do you expect, if you don't shoot you're not going to score' attitude. But under potter in the first couple of years I'd walk away more angry than ever under Hughton, frustrated by how close to being great we were - that final step to convert the chances we were creating. It felt worse to me that we were so close. Seeing chance after chance being wasted.

But something seems to have changed over the last few months. That (11) 12 (league) game winless run through October, November into December really seemed to do something. Since that Wolves game it feels like I'm back in that resigned to it feeling. We're not creating the chance we were. I'm walking away from games struggling to think of times we've really worked their keeper, and that old 'eh, what do you expect, if you don't work the keeper you're not going to score' attitude has crept back in. This sense of ineffective, slow passing it around the back hoping for a gap to just magically open up, and not trying to force or create one.

It is certainly starting to feel reminiscent of Hughton to me, too.

(To be clear, I'm not Potter out. I wasn't Hughton out, either, I can accept that our wage bill, or the players our wage bill affords us are going to limit us somewhat, doesn't stop me being disappointed by performances, results or the feeling these runs evoke in me).

Similar to “Go on then, who’s the striker we should sign?”

Punters don’t have the database of global players and coaches, gleaned from scouting and other sources, or know the level of budget, the relationships with agents. The club employ a small army of experts to do this.

Coming close to signing Darwin Nunez, then backing out over the final increment sought, shows that there are available solutions.

I tend to agree with Stat Bro that it's not all down to Potter and that the next coach will be straight out of the same mould and given similar blunt instruments. But, in the spirit of playing along, none of these could do worse and some may well do better and might be affordable.....

Yeah we've certainly given some visiting 'keepers the afternoon off. We don't seem to want to put the willies up them.

We are exposed at the back without Webster and Burn D&D were the business in the league below, but they are now that much older facing better attacks. A CB pairing of Velters and Duffs is not good enough.

Don’t take it too seriously. Ultimately the one thing that unites everyone on here (other than the Palace trolls) is we want to see Albion win. When they don’t it’s not surprising there’s some unhappy campers.

Personally I have never done either, but whatever the results, I far prefer the Potter style of play, as I was far more bored with the Hughton style.

Looking at seasons, even in Aug/Sept, using xG we’re a different animal from last season.

2020/21 - xG 1.42 per game, xGA 1.05
2021/22 - xG 1.18 per game, xGA 1.26

In summary, this season creating far fewer good chances (let alone taking into account our barn-door specialism when they arise) and we’re notably more vulnerable in defence.

The last 5 games are predictably even worse, we’re in the xPTS bottom three with Everton and Watford. Less an a goal a game xG, almost 2 xGA.

Why the decline from last season:
- opposition managers have found Potter’s system out, patiently waiting to rope-a-dope on the counter?
- we preferred playing behind closed doors?
- Ben White’s sorely missed at both ends of the pitch?
- Bissouma hasn’t been himself for 6 months?
- Sanchez’s all round game has dropped affecting his defence and distribution?
