I know a lot of people that have been there on holiday and they have loved it.
It isnt well known for its beaches, dont think it has any, but its a nice place and most of them love the brits.
If its cheap go for it. Bit of sunshine and a short flight, why not i would.

Not looking for anything special. I just like going to new places and ticking another country off the list. Anyone know which part of the Island is best to stay in?

Correct about the lack of beaches, but it has other charms. Valletta is really nice to spend a few hours wandering around. You could pop in the pub where Oliver Reed passed away; bit of a shrine in there for him.
Lots of history, some fantastic views over Grand Harbour.
For nightlife, St Julians can get quite lively in the summer.
The weather is great, they love us brits, which is unusual these days. Very proud people, especially about their part in the war.
I like it there.

Meopham, Kent.
We're looking for a cheapish getaway around April / May time, short flight would be nice. Does Malta have much for the kids to keep themselves occupied. I'm talking under 10's. Or is it a bit of a booze trip?

If you want a decent beach go to Mellieha Bay. All the buses go there, plenty of cafes for ice cream and refreshments.

Spinola Bay's nice, St Julian's is good - Paceville is where the nightlife is.

I'd say it is very family friendly, definitely not Magaluf that's for sure.
Stay around St Julians or Sliema (I think that's how you spell it).
Most of the good hotels have a decent sized pool due to the lack of beaches, (it's quite rocky). St Pauls Bay is well worth a visit though.
I do not work for the Maltese tourist board!

I found it both a bit tacky and a bit dull. Not a very common combination.

People who go to Malta have two extremes they either love it as its like England in the sun. My wife and I loved it or like my sons father in law he hated it and said if he could have stayed on the coach from the airport to the hotel he would have done.

Mellieha Bay is a man made beach but is quite good. You can go on a boat trip which includes the place where the Popeye film was made and also visit Gozo, which is a nice quiet day out.

Travel around the island is very good and cheap . The pubs are the nearest you will get to a British pub outside of Britain. Time share sellers was always a problem unless you told them you already had one and that is where you are staying. I always said I was staying at the Owara Palace.

So, where would you stay on the island that has a bit going on in terms of pubs/clubs etc? not hedonistic pissheads by any means but would like to go to a few bars of an evening.

If you're going to Valletta be sure to pay homage at Ollie's Pub where legendary pisshead Oliver Reed sadly expired after a monster session while filming Gladiator - without paying his bar bill

We went last April. I thought it was really nice, the missus hated it (though she is ten years younger than me).

St Julian's is the main bit for nightlife but we stayed in Sliema, just down the road. Also very nice, just a bit quiet.

There's loads to do. Valletta's really nice with the markets and that, and a day trip to Gozo is also worth doing. Mdina, not far from the national stadium, is also very HISTORIC. And Maltese buses are WICKERD, proper old school.

Check out my FB pics, MATTHEW.

Just don't do anything silly and come back engaged. :jester:

Was a good night out when I was in the Navy.. believe the 'gut' (straight street) has gone now though... was some dreadful wine called Marsovin (sp) that was about 7p a bottle....mind you, thats in the 70s.. probably about 30p by now..

We were given a free bottle of wine for eating in one particular restaurant, and it was absolutely FOUL.

St Julian's is probably okay to stay in as it looked spaced out enough to ensure you can stay somewhere reasonably quite.

Don't bother arsing about with transfers to and from the airport. You can get a bus to Valletta and then onwards to Sliema/St Julian's for about 2 quid.
