It's a superstition because the only time I've ever been awake at midnight, the following year was the shittiest of my life, so I always make sure to be asleep every year now.

I will probably be asleep. At least I hope I will be. New Years is for schmucks and I wish this year wouldn't end really.
That and I have children and would rather be at home with them than being vomited on by a random. At least puke from my kids has that family tie.

The one year I was awake for midnight, I had two months off work and two spells in hospital with a collapsed lung, my Grandma passed away and our pet dog, who was 16 years old and who we'd had since she was a puppy had to be put down, hence the superstition.
