Last week Ian Lucas, the MP for Wrexham, raised an old but sore issue in the Commons: that the UK has never let Wales nail its colours to the mast. The union flag is made up of the heraldic crosses of England, Scotland and Ireland - only three of the four nations. Surely it's time Wales got a look-in? On Tuesday the story gained momentum with the news that the culture minister, Margaret Hodge, was "considering" a redesign of the flag.
Though a flood of heraldic experts and Daily Telegraph readers have pointed out that Wales was conquered. "Constitutionally it's a principality of the kingdom of England," says Peter Gwynne-Jones of the Royal College of Arms. Which means Wales is represented by the Cross of St George
