My wife is manager of the Radiopharmacy Dept at the RSCH, which supplies essential drugs for scans to hospitals across Sussex - as well as the Nuclear Medicine Dept at RSCH who do a broad range of procedures (inc. cancer scans etc)
After meetings with her bosses they decided that they will be open on Monday, & working as usual for the entire day. My wife is a big fan of the Royals, so is disappointed to be missing the occasion - but realizes her job, and the obligation to hundreds of patients all over the county, comes first...

Whether anyone actually turns up for their appointments is a different matter...

Fair play to her and the team, hopefully repeated elsewhere.

I'm not surprised to be honest, this is a huge media event globally and The Royal Family have become global celebrities, their story in the last few years resembling that of a soap opera.

Definitely not the Queen, but most others have used the press to advance a personal agenda. That agenda being their image in the press, the whole thing being quite cyclic

What I've witnessed over the last few days is the death of a very remarkable woman by anyone's definition, but whose family is viewed by many through the lens of a Celebrity Love Island.

I've had some fascinating conversations over the last few days with those who love the Royals. Most dislike Camilla because of Diana and by extension mistrust Charles. I can't repeat what they think about Meghan.

Royalist or addicted to the "drama" ? I think many confuse the two.

…..and then we have politicians with zero attraction at all

It's good that they were ridiculed, and the Stasi comparisons are, I think...fair.

As I said, I will be out on my bike.

I have avoided commenting on anything that might upset those that are mourning, but I draw the line at being ordered to mourn.

Absolutely correct.
I am no Republican, but, enough is enough. I swerve the wall to wall coverage on telly by watching something on I Player or Netflix.
The article almost made me laugh, cry, shout and swear all at once.
My old brain quickly came to its senses; well, to the ones that are still working and it said to me, ‘ just tell them to f—k off.:tosser:

So you trust politicians with the public purse do you?
FFS....do you people never learn. They are our elected representatives but they do not represent us or our national interest. They take us to war without reference. They sell off our gold reserve without reference. They abuse the education of our children without reference. They bail out institutionally corrupt banks with public money without reference. They pay out billions to banks in lockdown to help business, without due diligence and then allow the corrupt banks to further lend to spurious and fictional companies, that then disappear into thin air. Then the government, after the horse has bolted, spend hundreds of millions trying to find these missing companies. They award contracts, without reference, to friends and friends of friends. They stealth tax us to fill up their coffers that they have successfully emptied themselves through irresponsibility. They pay lip service to business. Finding ever increasing ways to drain more money out of them, stifling investment and growth. They pump billions into foreign aid, much of which lines the pockets of foreign leaders, all without reference, whilst leaving our public services short of money.
We are a passive nation. More concerned with ourselves than national interest. We get the public figures we deserve because we vote them in and then leave them unaccountable to do whatever they like. Its easy to throw shit at the Royal Family. Soft targets. Parasites who don't contribute anything. Well, take a look around you. Whole swathes of people in this country, millions and millions, who have decided that it is easier to milk the system and live off tax payers money and contribute as little as they can, whilst extracting as much as they can for themselves. The feckless, the greedy and the entitled. All living around you and all being supported by elected representatives. Our society needs checks and balances to stop these idiots burning down the asylum. I despise them. Every single one of them. Caught with their noses in the trough a few years ago, they got away with it, unpunished. The British public turned a blind eye to it. Well fck you and everyone else who wants a republic. Your welcome to it.

Quite right keep it the same, you have pointed out how wonderfully the system is working. Stick with it.

Or take the opportunity for some constitutional reform and put those checks and balances in place. Start with an elected upper house. . . In Australia their role is the 'keep the ******** honest'.

I am honestly interested in how you think the continuation of the monarchy is going to help any of the things you have pointed out in your post.

Elected upper house in a must really, the whole life peer thing is just ridiculous. I can't understand why it is tolerated in the modern age

Seeing Prince Edward sporting all those military honours and medals after a few weeks of basic training and then quitting must be such a kick in the teeth for people that actually gave everything in their military career.

On reflection I'm inclined to leave things alone - for much the same reason that I favoured remaining in the EU. It is better to tinker with a working system to improve it rather than destroy it and hope the next thing will be better. If we wanted we could probably remove the king's remaining constitutional powers, such as dissolving parliament or refusing to confirm an election result, without too much bother, albeit no monarch would be mad enough to pull such a stunt I would have thought, and any future monarch who does go mad will be dealt with long before they go full George III.

As an aside, I find it ironic that the preponderance of active unquestioning support for the monarchy appears to reside with the conservative right, the same cohort, on the whole, who favoured a no-deal Brexit. Funny old world.

I 100% agree.

“Idea of monarchy as symbol of duty or sacrifice ‘a lie’, says Labour’s Clive Lewis”

https://www.theguardian.com/politic...y-or-sacrifice-a-lie-says-labours-clive-lewis

I have always been baffled how so many people swallow the deliberate and fervently maintained lie that the Royals “serve” our country.

Equally baffling that those that that guzzle the lie expect the rest of us to respect the monarchy too. Can't help but be mildly impressed by the effectiveness of the brainwashing though. It's quite a trick.

I have always been baffled how so many people swallow what The Guardian says without question.
They don't, do they?

The Guardian acts as a bulwark to the barrage of right wing alternatives, half of which are indisputably utter shite. In this instance I make the Guardian just about right.

Gratified that the vote is relatively close at 40-60 amid the most intense royalist propaganda I’ve ever seen in my five decades. Gives me a lot of hope that my kids might help to finish the democracy job in their time

But this is nsc and Brighton/Hove, a bastion of independent thinking (the Greens) and one-time supporters of Corbyn.

If it’s 60% royalist in this parish, the next nationwide polls will show a ‘landslide’ for a monarchy.

You are going to tell me next the BBC is a bastion of leftwing Greeny/Corbynites, right? This is how this usually works?

If anything social conservatism is overpresented in predominantly white male subcultures

If anyone went by nsc as a litmus test of anything political in the world, they’d have predicted Remain by a crushing majority, Corbyn landslides in both 2017 and 2019, Hilary Clinton in 2016.

This is an almost uniquely different part of the UK and has been since the 1960’s more often than not.
