Is Harveys just a tad over-rated??

Nothing to do with drinking, because I don't, but the sight of the Harveys Shire Horses and cart moving along Western Road, near Churchill Square this afternoon was a beautiful sight.

Magnificent horses.:)

I tend to never bad mouth London Pride because it was for a long time our salvation. I dont drink it now but its still popular amongst a lot of the older set. I just prefer the hoppy palea and APA styles now. Burning skys porter came and went in my local before i got a taste

You DO realise that 'Gales' don't actually exist since they were taken over (and had their Horndean Brewery shut down) by Fullers?

It is all brewed up in Chiswick these days.

I don't think you are the least bit 'sorry for unleashing this' - it's just an everyday NSC 'look at me' thread.

Peace and good will to all men, Brother Jakarta

The best Harveys I have had is at the Royal Oak, the pub Seagulls over London meets in. They have the full range there and my two favourites, the Mild and Old, are usually bang on form (I am not that great a fan of Sussex). I think it does need to be kept very well. Hophead I am not a fan of - I find it too hoppy; I prefer maltier beers. Oddly enough, the best pint of London Pride I had was in the pub near St Mary's where we were in the upstairs bar, while the Southampton fans were downstairs, better than any pint I have had in London. My favourite beers are probably those from Cotleigh in Somerset and Adnams in Suffolk.

Agree they are magnificent.

Did you see them when they came to the AMEX earlier this season?

All this talk on here about London Pride. Well l think in terms of London based brewers Youngs are far superior to Fullers, only my opinion of course. Youngs ales though aren't too easy to find in Sussex, (Brighton and one or two other main towns excepted).

Another Fail.

Youngs hasn't come from London for some time now, you wouldn't guess it from their website of course but their beers are brewed in Bedford at the Charles Wells Brewery.

The truth is that Harvey's is only being discussed because it is a East Sussex brew. It would not get a mention amongst any of the real beer discussions on a national level. It was a long time ago now the Olympia business.

I always look to try the beers that win national awards and I tend to be a little underwhelmed. I am sure it would taste better sitting in their busy brewery tap than at a beer festival.

You are correct in some respects. If we lived in Hartlepool we would likely as not be having the same discussion about Camerons. But Harveys is our local beer, you can go to the brewery, it has not travelled far, and it is a factor that the landlord knows it, cares for it, fellow drinkers want to drink it, they sell a lot of it, you have always drunk it, your family drink it, your mates drink it, and to cap it all....... it is an excellent pint.

Not everyone has that fortune. Not everyone recognises their good fortune, not everyone appreciates their good fortune. That is just life.

Me? I would not have it any other way.

Your good fortune is Harveys. My good fortune is Burning Sky in Firle. As Brewers go, Mark Tranter is a genius, if he were a footballer he'd be world class. He pushes boundaries, breaks rules and works extremely hard to produce some of the best beers this country has to offer. I urge you to get yourself a bottle of Saison or Monolith for Xmas - treat yourself! The modern Ale drinker is truly spoilt in this county. The traditional ale drinker is lucky too because Harveys will always be same until they brew their last pint.

I always look out for Burning Sky. I keep a watch on the strength as I am more of a session man. But they are great beers.

But that does not dim my appreciation of the merits of Harveys.

We are blessed with the quality of our local beer.

Well Plateau is the one then Mumm. The Aurora is a bit pokey and the Devil one is just that. Great great brewer that boy though. I will pick up a gallon tin of Hopheads, APA and Sunburst on Tuesday on the way back from work at a Partridge Green for Xmas morning but God knows what I'm going to have to drink that evening.
