High up on the South Downs.
Surely just because there are more pubs?

Huge density of pubs in London, Manc and Liverpool but only a very few have changed their names.

OK Lets play name that pub! What are the following now called?
The Stanford Arms
The Kensington
The Compton
The Belle Vue
Brighton Tavern
Springfield
Marquess of Exeter
Eclipse
Half Moon
Richmond

My point is this the real Brightonians of the suburbs I mention would not consider Brighton is hip at all just a place to live.

The Brightonians of the suburbs would do not seem to want to live elsewhere. I would suggest they see it as more than just a place to live.

My parents are suburbians and there is very little movement away. You don't see many for sale signs around there, despite the very best efforts of Estate Agents trying to coax people to leave to get a little cut of the exchange.

Having read through all the posts I would say that Brighton is in my opinion not Britain's Hippest City, but I would say that it is Britain's Smaller Hippest City. I can't see how Brighton can compete with the big places like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmimgham and London. Due to their size I think these places are more lilely to be hipper due to the bigger populations and therfore a greater likelihood of more hip people living there.
Having moved from Portsmouth when I was nine (1981) to at the time, the non-trendy Hanover area and seeing plenty of other places round the UK during my travels, I think we are very lucky to live in Brighton.
Please note HB&B there are plenty of Brightonians in Hanover , they may be children, but they are Brightonians born and bred, the kids of the people that have moved into the area over the past twenty years.

It's the west hill, not the westcliffe. And I've no idea why they changed from a good name to a crap name. The Brighton Tavern is still the Brighton Tavern, is it not?

"There was a bit of smearing – persons unknown added Lucas's name to the anti-gay, anti- abortion Westminster Declaration – while the outgoing Labour MP could have been no less gracious in defeat had he stood behind Lucas flicking V-signs and making faces".

What a load of bollox, the outgoing MP was Dave Lepper, didn't contest his seat so therefore wasn't defeated.

I'm a native Brightonian who actively chooses to live in an outlying area (or suburb), but nobody would ever describe me as a chav ?
If I had a choice I would live in the burbs, i'm fed up with silly festivals, dog shit, broken glass, bumping into smack heads/piss heads at 8.30 am on my way to work, litter, parking issues, tourists and so much more.

Fair enough, I might pay a visit to the suburbs one day to see what goes on and what people look like.
