Even though Joey Barton has shown a bit of sense (for once) by pleading guilty to his latest assault charge I think it's possible that he'll get another custodial sentence tacked on to his current one. However, even though players like Lee Hughes and Peter Swan (younger NSCers will say 'Who ?') got a second chance will Newcastle still keep him on ?

I would like to agree, but unfortunately there will always be clubs and/or maangers who would take a chance on him. I guess the thery would be that he would HAVE to be a good boy from now on.

Or perhaps the manager backs their ability to harness the talent of the player. After all Alex Ferguson turned Eric Cantona from a liability into a mercurial footballer AND stood by him after the slap he gave the scummer.

If I was a manager I wouldnt touch him with a barge pole (unless to push it through his thick little skull) but I can see that the odd manager might back their ability to get him back on track.

I would like to think he would be outcast as it would send a message to the impressionable that you can't behave like a thug and still be a well paid footballer.

but unfortunately this is is not an ideal world, and there will always be managers/chairman/ clubs that don't have morals or look' care about the message so long as they benefit.

There's a string of managers out there who'll take a chance on a cheap fallen star.

Harry Redknapp loves one of those.

Haven't Newcastle said he can only stay if he takes a massive cut in wages.

(Probably down to about 30k a week)

Peter Swan got his second chance eight years after his sentence - I can't see Barton hanging around that long. Anyone else remember him playing at the Goldstone shortly after his comeback? A 3-3 if I recall correctly.

A more obvious parallel for Barton is Duncan Ferguson. He came back pretty quickly after an assault charge.

True but the wages in Swan's day were not what they are now. Besides, when you look at the facts I would suggest he was a little harshly treated.

If a footballer can continue his playing career after killing one driver and leaving another one permanently disabled, then I think Joey Barton has every chance of finding another football club willing to pay for his services.

I think that it is about right it is the same as any normal builder or similar would expecvt to get for this type of assault.

Well, the bloke has a fair bit of previous doesn't he ? Maybe he's found Jesus or something. Mind you I agree that had he had his sentence extended there is now doubt somebody would have offered him something. I am interested as to where that leaves his current employer. They want him to take a large cut in salary which, as I understand it leaves him the option of walking. There's more than a few Premier Clubs that would like a player of his skill for free.

Even though while on bail for said crime he commits another very simmilar one and is currently serving time for it? Surely you shouldn't be able to get a suspended sentance if you are commited a crime whilst on bail? Surely you have commited the offence that would have triggered the sentance by not learning from your mistake?

after the slap he gave the scummer.

I dont think this incident of LEGENDARY proportions, can be refered to as a slap
