You seem to have missed off an “s”. The attackerS were far right Connor McGregor fan bois and housing estate scum bags on e-scooters smashing up businesses just before the Christmas rush and setting police cars alight. Yes, I imagine quite a few of them are known to the police.

I meant the original attack. The riots are absolutely shocking. My family is Irish, and I know Dublin well. The scenes are heartbreaking. But I’ve seen nothing about the original attack. Apparently not terrorism-related but I can’t see any alternative explanation at the moment.

Just been reading the Irish Times. Seems the police are now saying there’s no connection between the stabbing and the rioting / looting. Must admit, the footage of the looting doesn’t look like political protest. More like kids in hoodies doing a bit of Christmas shopping. I guess we’ll know more when the dust has settled.

I noticed yesterday that Connor McGregor was stirring things up, telling his Twitter followers they were at war. The responses he got don't make for pleasant reading.

I must say I’m surprised a man who gets kicked in the head for a living has some dumb thoughts. But more seriously, surely this would count as incitement?

Was following this online yesterday afternoon on Twitter.

Seemingly the attack happened, it was framed as a terrorist attack snd “patriots” were told to get themselves to the area quickly. McGregor (didn’t bother checking the facts) then inflamed the situation by calling out terrorism.

The looting and vandalism happened shortly afterwards. Those involved will struggle to justify how raiding a footlocker and trashing a Macdonalds was done in solidarity with the victims.

I believe the attacker was an Irish citizen, that’s what the authorities have reported anyway.

If we’re talking about the looting and rioting, it’s surely relevant to mention the events that may (or may not - I’m unsure on this) have led up to it. Apart from anything else it’s showing a bit of simple compassion. We have young children being stabbed in the street, for heaven’s sake.

From what I briefly heard on the radio this morning, social media was rife with a rumour that the stabber was dark-skinned/Muslim/whatever-it-is-that-gets-a-certain-group-of-people-all-upset-these-days so they went out for vengeance or something.

FFS. "attempting to steer the conversation". How about attempting to HAVE a conversation? I really dislike the kneejerk anger when people try to discuss issues on ths forum. Control your emotions. Engage with the topic. Not everyone is being devious and playing the agent provocateur.

I saw the OP's post and was responding to it. The very first thing s/he said was about the stabbing of the children, and it was the first I'd heard about the riots. It was also after 1 in the morning, when reports were sketchy. When I looked at a couple of UK papers, I saw almost nothing about the event that's supposed to have led up to it, so I asked about it here. I still don't fully understand what's happened. Is it some far-right political protest or a bunch of 15 year olds raiding sports shops and having the time of their lives?

The Irish Times first of all quoted the Commissioner saying there was no connection between the stabbings and the rioting, I see this has now changed to they're "keeping an open mind." They've not been at all clear about whether there's a connection, and whether the rioting is really some upsurge of latent fascism in the Irish character (which I've never really noticed before), or if the two things are coincidental. But either way, keep your hair on and perhaps avoid projecting your anger and doubting people's motives.

The attack was stopped by a Brazillian chap who was passing the incident on his motorbike, he whacked the assailant on the head with his bike helmet.
