FFS. "attempting to steer the conversation". How about attempting to HAVE a conversation? I really dislike the kneejerk anger when people try to discuss issues on ths forum. Control your emotions. Engage with the topic. Not everyone is being devious and playing the agent provocateur.

I saw the OP's post and was responding to it. The very first thing s/he said was about the stabbing of the children, and it was the first I'd heard about the riots. It was also after 1 in the morning, when reports were sketchy. When I looked at a couple of UK papers, I saw almost nothing about the event that's supposed to have led up to it, so I asked about it here. I still don't fully understand what's happened. Is it some far-right political protest or a bunch of 15 year olds raiding sports shops and having the time of their lives?

The Irish Times first of all quoted the Commissioner saying there was no connection between the stabbings and the rioting, I see this has now changed to they're "keeping an open mind." They've not been at all clear about whether there's a connection, and whether the rioting is really some upsurge of latent fascism in the Irish character (which I've never really noticed before), or if the two things are coincidental. But either way, keep your hair on and perhaps avoid projecting your anger and doubting people's motives.

For what it's worth, I really enjoy your posts. You remind me a bit of another poster (a teacher based in the Liverpool area, whose user name I have momentarily forgotten) with whom I generally disagree with more than I disagree with you, who always posts thoughtfully and courteously. I occasionally crossed swords with him, passim, over Brexit. However people who can post on all manner of threads in an inquiring way, without pursuing an agenda (even though they may often reveal their perspectives, which may not always be uncomplicated) is what makes NSC fun as far as I'm concerned.

Are they anti-immigrant? Their hospitality industry (hotels and restaurants certainly) seem to exist only because of the numbers of eastern European immigrants, and I think they're grateful. Maybe it's just the non-white 'irregulars' the Dubliners object to.

Haha, thanks. I am Sussex born and bred but when I was mid twenties moved to Liverpool for 14 years.

And if it was me, it's so funny that @Harry Wilson's tackle sits almost directly in front of me in the West Upper. I did, for a while, enjoy arguing in the Brexit thread as I had long term doubts about the way the EU was set up. But just as the vote was, the debate was highjacked by people with strong agendas and unconscionable ideas, particularly the far right. Hindsight is a fine old thing, but needless to say Brexit has been awful, and could not have happened at a worse time.

Haha spot on. Although in all honesty, I've actually calmed down a lot the last couple of years. Getting older and care less. My brother seems more irate than me but Harry assures me the 'look' is due to my outbursts.
