Ipswich Sign Currie in £250k Deal

Of course it's a disaster, until we get somebody in the team who's as good as Currie, or better.

As far as goals scored, we're currently bottom 3, and we've just sold our most creative player.

If doesn't matter whether we have a defence like Chelsea or one like Crewe, we'll still go down unless we create more chances and score more goals.

Let's get real here - Jarrett, Molango, Hart, Jones, Watson and Robinson or any combination thereof are NOT the answer to this particular problem.

All those who slagged him off a the beginning of the season ( you know who you are) get down on your knees and beg forgiveness. Watch and weep now our one creative player has gone.

This is a disaster. 250 k is nothing for a player of Currie's skills - I don't think we got nearly enough for him. Who can we find to replace him for even a fraction of the money McGhee may get.

This really is a sad day for BHA.

We're doomed.

Nurse, Nurse ... medication for my friend ... 250K for 30 year old is bloody good business especially as he's slow as hell, can't tackle and drifts in and out the game. (we only paid 100K for Leon, and there's less money around now)
Yes he has done a great job for us and I'd rather he stay but for :censored: sake he wants to leave, so goodbye and thank you very much for some great performances.

He'd be mad to stay and its his last chance at getting into the premiershite.
Bet he isn't a regular starter by the end of the season ....:(

It's always a disappointment to see a decent player leave, but we are the only constant at the club, as with anywhere else (even the bloody ground went, for God's sake) so we must be realistic. Currie was always going to accept an offer like that, at 30 he couldn't possibly refuse it.

£250K is a lot of money for that type of player at his age from our club, especially to squeeze that much out of Ipswich who are hardly awash with money themselves.

With regard to the impact his absence will have on the side, I suspect that if somebody asked 'which players would you least like to leave?' even in the last few weeks, he would certainly not have been no.1 on many lists. I can't quite understand some of the wailing and gnashing of teeth on here ('we're doomed' ???). It's not like we've sold, say, Cullip or anything.

As for where the money goes, I'm worried that with the loss of Currie, Blackwell, Rodger and Piercy, and the freezing out of Hart, Jarrett etc, the number of players that McGhee seems to view as up to first team standard is worryingly small (I realise that Blackwell and Rodger were never available to him, but was hopeful they'd return). We do need more depth, but there's absolutely no way in the world that more than a very small percentage of it will go on players. We have to remember what sort of financial shit we're in.

Mark McGhee's comments on the official site are a tad disturbing:

McGhee: We Must Move On

By Tim Dudding

Mark McGhee this morning took his first training session without Darren Currie, after the winger's shock £250,000 move to promotion-chasing Ipswich Town.

But rather than dwell on Currie's departure, the Albion boss is taking a realistic approach to the situation_by pointing out the club's financial predicament.

Speaking before training, McGhee told Seagulls World, "The future and survival of this football club has to go before any other decision. Anyone who is under the impression that we are anything other than on the brink is deluding themselves.

"That money was necessary to keep the club going and it came just at the right time, so we had to take it."

Currie made a huge impact after arriving from Wycombe on a free transfer in the summer, scoring two goals and providing many more during the first half of the season for the Seagulls.

But while McGhee has nothing but praise for the 30-year-old, the Albion manager is confident his side can regroup in time for Saturday's trip to the New Den.

"From a football point of view we've lost a player who has been a big influence. But Darren has left, we wish him luck and it's a fantastic opportunity for him.

"We'll miss him at times, but we won't miss him all the time. We went to West Ham and won 1-0 without him and we'll go to Millwall probably with the same team, so why should we be anything other than positive?"

Other than the stuff about the finances, the last paragraph worries me as it implies that he is going to drop Knight again, wholly undeservedly IMO after what was an excellent performance against Rotherham.

Of course it's a no-brainer for Currie, and good luck to him, he's been great for the Albion. That's not the point....

What is the point?

In the real world, someone made us an offer we couldn't refuse - we took it - we move on. We cannot afford to turn down offers like this. We are not going down because of the absence of ONE player. We are not a one-man team.

I can't believe some of these posts, The way some people are talking it's like we'd given away a 19 year old Pele to Palace and paid them to take him. I never in a million years would have guessed that one of our top transfer sales would have been a 30 year old who'd spent the majority of his career in the in the lower leagues - and could have left in the summer for nothing. Plus he WANTED to go! Most of you are probably quite low-grade clerical workers and don't have any management skills or experience, but let me tell you the last thing you want on your team is someone who is resentful because they think you're holding them back. There's far more to it than just kicking a bloody ball.

A lot of you have got to get real and come back to planet earth.

We didn't sign Currie to tackle for fucks sake!! Every play maker drifts in and out of the game, even the best ones like Hoddle.

Ok, £250K I now accept isn't too bad but for my money he's been one of our best players this season and has created most of our best moves. Who will replace him?

Of course I don't blame him for wanting to go but I have every right to feel disappointed.

This is most disturbing. Even with the A&K money, the Currie money and the money from the spurs match there may not be enough for the club to cover overheads. I would be surprised if the shareholders are willing to put any more in and the are no assets to borrow against, unlike most of the other clubs in financial difficulties.

Who can say whether the Nimbys and the politicians will get their wish and we disappear before anyone has to make a decision.

It's a bit doom and gloom but not too far fetched in my opinion

Ain't that the truth?

Of course the club is on the brink - we have known that for ages. Why do you think A&K was launched.

Are low paid people less entitled to give their opinion on a player at their football club than you are?

And which football club do you manage or does being a manager of an office or equivalent qualify you as a football expert?

Been stuck in meetings for the last 24 hours and got this news through Vodaphone in the middle of a meeting this morning. Wow!!!! I didn't see that coming!!!

Yes it's sad. the best passer we've hahd in a long time but think McGhee was thinking of a different formation at the beginning of the season with Molango, Currie and Jarrett. In the last month or so we've been more about being tight than scoring... like the tail-end of last season and in this team I don't think Currie was guaranteed to start. Great player but good business.

My only concern is that this doesn't make McGhee think about his future at a club that sells the best players.

Will we have money to spend... I doubt it but what can we do? Just get behind the team... for better or worse.

If we had sold Cullip, then Virgo could be dropped to the back and Hinshelwood has proved himself in the middle. In time it wouldn't be that bad a loss

If we sell Harding, then Mayo will come into the team who has, in my opinion, better positional sense and makes fewer errors.

The problem is that there is no obvious replacement for Currie,
certainly his dead ball skills. If we don't sign one then the chances are that we will go down. Doom and Gloom? I don't think so. We have 25 points from 22 games which means we are half way towards safety. Currie's skills have probably been worth at least one win and a draw, meaning that we can expect 21 points from the remaining games without a replacement. Couple that with the lack of an obvious team to finish 3rd from bottom and I would say we are now probably favourites for that position.

To make up the shortfall we need to sign the Arsenal winger and / or Leon to excel from dead ball deliveries. Whatever happens, I am sure Mcghee realises that this is a big loss judging by his comments.

No of course they can give their opinions, when did I say they couldn't? However your somwhat unintelligent posting has nicely illustrated my point. Now get back to your boring job.
