Two of the fights were a few rows in front of me. Seemed to be a combination of pissed up (or coked up) lads mixed with sober left wing guys who didn't like their comments about their lino. Lots of accusations of racism. To be clear I was too far back to hear the original comments, but stewards were called and came and split them up. It started again when we scored as presumably one party or other took the opportunity in the chaos to have a pop at the other. Well that's what it looked like anyway.

How you can ever start on a fellow Brighton fan is beyond me, but maybe they had good reason

NSC is so odd sometimes, with the way it picks up on one completely well-meaning and innocent comment and won’t let up. It’s almost as if people are somehow accusing @Giraffe of being a racist.

Sounds like some terrible behaviour but I wouldn’t use Palace away as a correct sample of our fans. It has always attracted “fans” that aren’t at other games. You get people who don’t bother with much else throughout the season but hunt out tickets for Palace to purposely cause trouble. Barely recognise anyone at Palace away. God knows how they get tickets with all the new rules.

I know I’ll get hammered, but some of the discontent I’ve seen is because supporters sit in the wrong seat.

There are a number of our fans who think it’s okay, and a significant number who don’t.

IMO, when games are a sell-out, which most away games are, it is not okay. I have seen at least three scuffles in the last 12 months because of this.

The club provide a friends and family option, reading seat numbers is not difficult.
There is no excuse. So if you’re politely asked to move, please do so…

I’m a similar age, started aways at a similar time and have only done a few more grounds. You’re absolutely correct about the old days, maybe a bit of tension between the Brighton based and LA based lot at times but basically we were all Brighton together.

It’s got much worse in the Premier League. Allocated seating often the cause as we’re selling out everywhere and some blokes just won’t accept they can’t have 20 of them on a row with six seats free.

Age not really a factor either. A very aggressive bloke tried to nick my place in Amsterdam and must have been late 50s / early 60s. We all saw what that old bloke did at Marseille. Meanwhile, I ended up with a group of youngsters at Forest (was with my son and there’s also a 60 year old in that group but most in their early 20s) and it was like the old days. Got pissed on the train, made travel f-ups together, had a laugh.

If someone’s calling out racism though, good on them.

The away seating thing started in our experience in the Hughton Championship years, 20 year olds somehow harvesting a stack of tickets then demanding that huge groups of them hogged a row. Zero manners or discussion.

Agree about that middle aged blokes thing. Age for some doesn’t diminish the Neanderthal genes when topped up with Cocaine.

Exactly this. Its a tiny percentage who feel the need to sit where they like and it just creates issues.
On a side note kudos to the steward stood next to me who went absolutely berserk with joy when we scored and gave me a massive hug and then joined in all the charts for the rest of the game

That's true about the LA lads as I was one of them back in the day.
We never got on with the Maybridge lads but when we went to watch The Albion we all went as one.
This in fighting is purely fuelled by Cocaine etc.
It's a problem that won't go away and will only get worse sadly.

Well it sounds like a really great evening all round.

It was the most cocky I'd seen palace fans pre game for quite a while. They were pretty confident (and I don't blame them) ....luckily they were woeful and we were slightly less terrible.

Apart from the beginning of the match and our goal it was a pretty sombre atmosphere , most people looked pretty pissed off. At least we can always create noise at palace as the low roof helps.

Yours and mine and similar paths. My youngest is 11 and eldest is 16. I am maybe more sensitive to what i see and here but we do seem to have a group of older followers who seem to be more 'unpredictable' and have wide eyed stares. But the language and entitlement is back towards the 80s

I wasn’t there last night so can’t comment but I mentioned this around 2 years ago as something I could foresee happening - mainly when this annoying trend started occurring of launching drinks in the air in tight concourses with no care over who they hit and the overly-forced ‘scenes’ for likes on social media.
A lot of our older generation who got into trouble 15/20 years ago still go and a lot with kids etc and it’s been close to happening for a while, I’ve seen a few have a word before. There’s less trouble now but the pointless antisocial behaviour has increased dramatically.

Really first time ever escorted to the ground only got in the ground at KO

Walked to the ground and back from where I’d parked, didn’t see any issues at all. Atmosphere in the ground was pretty subdued compared to recent seasons. Plenty of people displaced from seats and squeezed in groups or on the steps (had gaps in our row however) but didn’t see any of the nastiness being described on here - hopefully the bellends get some kind of comeuppance

I have seen a lof of arguments about seats and the like over the years but only once seen a proper punch up at Shrewsbury. It was after the final game of the season in one of our promotion seasons and two old blokes near me in the seats started swinging at each other over who was the most loyal fan. It was as pathetic as it was funny…..but pathetic in an amusing way.

Reading this just reminds me (yet again) why I stopped going to Palace away. The play-off semi was the last time I went. Always grim. I suppose if you want a throw-back to the 70s/80s, fair enough. But this nostalgia for a “real football” experience (which the media hype up when swooning over Selhurst and its atmosphere) is not for me. I’ve been delighted to discover that “real football” still exists at places like Forest, where the ground is old-school, and the atmosphere is genuine. Friendly people. Great pubs. Lovely club.

Unfortunately I also witnessed racist comments from Brighton in the away end at Chelsea. This is a potential trend we should make sure we get rid of sharpish. Zero tolerance.
