The Choo Choo Train played two support gigs in two weeks at the Escape. They were very entertaining live. In between songs the drummer kept coming up to the Mic and chatting to the audience. He kept asking 'Is Baawby Gillespie' here? I bought the Briar Rose EP at the first gig and my mate tried to buy a copy at the second, only to be told that there was only one copy left and they wanted to give it to Baawby. I'm not sure whether Gillespie ever turned up to get it.

I found out recently that Briar Rose is a cover version. The song is written by Matthew Sweet and originally by 'The Buzz of Delight'. I must admit that I'd never heard of Matthew Sweet. He seems to have been involved in the Athens scene, which I was never a big fan of. Its a great song and I might look into him more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMruziE4DBE.

Although I picked Birthday Girl from 'The Clock Comes Down The Stairs' I think Microdisney's lost masterpiece was their third album 'Crooked Mile'. They had signed to Virgin and were expected to make a breakthrough, but it just didn't happen. It's still one of my favourite albums. There's a good piece on it by Julian Cope here: http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/review/1299/

And yes Staly, you are spot on with Jade. Fantastic song.

He wrote "Are we gonna be alright", the classic B-side of Sunflower, also covered by St Etienne.

Rodney Allen!! Come on, his best has to be 'Circle Line' - "round and round on the Circle Line, just like this dodgy life of mine, no real money and no career, the future to me seems so unclear, I could join the army and drive a tank, or whistle at girls from the safety of scaffold planks". Poetry. Simply poetry. The West Country's answer to Billy Bragg or Shelley (!).

Those are great lines and I could have picked any number of Rodney's. I went for Happysad because it sums up my old man's nostalgic view of those years.

I hope you're referring to Sussex's own Percy Bysshe and not the awful Sarah band...

How dare you, Sir! That must be close to indie treason, surely, slagging off a Sarah act! Though I did notice some people were a bit mean about Blueboy earlier in the thread - personally I'm a big fan of Blueboy. Though I think I may be a bit biased as the lead-singer (I believe) died in Martletts Hospice about the same time as my old man.
I was talking about old Perce as it happens.

Anyone remember The Bollwevils? They had at least one fabulous song, the mighty 'Talk To Me'.

We're happy to break the taboos here - it's not a closed shop. Are you going to stick up for Tramway as well?? I've seen The Bollweevils, but I have no Bollweevils. 'Talk to me' is also the title of a beautiful B-side by Moose. 'Here it comes' was the most popular title for a C86/late 80s type of band - Shop Assistants, East Village, Stone Roses. Possibly more...?

By the way, I have 61 different Sarah 7"s.....I had 62 last night but sold Sarah 1. There is a fella in West London who has offered me £250 quid for them, shall I take it?

No. Keep them- but got to ask- how much did you get for Sarah 1?

£175. I guess that's not bad for something that cost me £1.70. Two weeks before though it had sold for £249 so I'm a little disappointed, but I guess the only man in the world prepared to pay £249 for Sarah 1 already had his copy!

That's not a bad return at all. Guess it was hard to part with it though.

Evening chaps. Been whiling away a few minutes on YouTube. Thought I'd share a few

I love YouTube. I love how you can just choose one song, then let it lead you through vaguely connected suggestions, down a beautiful nostalgic path...

On purely monetary considerations: yes, if you don't want the hassle of putting 61 separate items on eBay. No if you want to maximise your proceeds.

Try as I might, I could only cut down the compilation for HKFC and Tinycowboy to 103 songs, and even that's with leaving out way too many corkers. I was going to organise the tracklist so it runs like a seamless mix from C86 copyists, to shimmering pop specialists, to feedback warriors... but that would've taken forever, so I sorted by song length instead. 4 CDs, close to 5 hours.

If anyone else fancies a set, PM me your address. It'll take me a while to get 'em sorted, but good things come to those who wait. Apparently.

Oh, and if you think that you can't have an indiepop song that's almost 6 minutes long, check out this all-time classic and prepare for goosepimples if you play it loud enough )

It's a top tune, pop pickers. The whole 'Secret of the Loveninjas' album is just a wonderful mix, veering from pure-pop, to Pulp-like anthems, to shoe-gaze beauty. Genuinely awesome and probably pick-upable for 4 or 5 quid on Ebay. One of the Top 10 albums of the last 10 years (in my chart anyway).

Thanks Murray! I think this is going to keep the thread going for another few months as we digest these songs. By my reckoning, I have the grand total of 5 of these songs already, so you will be broadening my horizons considerably. And BHA won yesterday as well. Things are looking good!
