The Choo Choo Train played two support gigs in two weeks at the Escape. They were very entertaining live. In between songs the drummer kept coming up to the Mic and chatting to the audience. He kept asking 'Is Baawby Gillespie' here? I bought the Briar Rose EP at the first gig and my mate tried to buy a copy at the second, only to be told that there was only one copy left and they wanted to give it to Baawby. I'm not sure whether Gillespie ever turned up to get it.
I found out recently that Briar Rose is a cover version. The song is written by Matthew Sweet and originally by 'The Buzz of Delight'. I must admit that I'd never heard of Matthew Sweet. He seems to have been involved in the Athens scene, which I was never a big fan of. Its a great song and I might look into him more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMruziE4DBE.
Although I picked Birthday Girl from 'The Clock Comes Down The Stairs' I think Microdisney's lost masterpiece was their third album 'Crooked Mile'. They had signed to Virgin and were expected to make a breakthrough, but it just didn't happen. It's still one of my favourite albums. There's a good piece on it by Julian Cope here: http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/review/1299/
And yes Staly, you are spot on with Jade. Fantastic song.
