Yes, we made bids for the PSV guy as confirmed by PSV themselves, and Eric Smith (St Pauli) also recently said we made a bid for him. Clearly there is a desire to get a CB in but I just don't think we were keen on going all-in for it given the adequate number of CBs in the squad. If (most likely candidate) Igor would have left I'm sure our efforts to bring in a new CB would have been more intense.

Problem is also obviously that whoever comes in, they need to be prepared to be backups for Van Hecke and Dunk as none of those will be benched this season even if the new Alessandro Nesta turns up out of nowhere
Additionally, a lot of the time transfers are like a mortgage chain, a sale has to happen for budget and squad happiness reasons before a signing can be made. A lot of the time the issue is more getting a player out than bringing one in.

It's the usual thing, everyone's happy with the depth of the squad straight after a win - at least until we next lose. Lose again and then it becomes a big thing, sensible/timely additions avoid that usual merry go round in sentiment

There is no way to avoid people's idiocy other than to draw every single game.

I think he is decent enough in home games when we are on top, when the others in the team are all functioning well.

I see him as a weakness in away games when we are under pressure which will cost us.

Don’t rate him at all.

Turning circle of an oil tanker, positionally very poor, limited pace, and poor decision maker.

We clearly need to strengthen in this area.

You're obviously basing this on more than one game, but this really doesn't chime with what I saw on Sunday.

He got a yellow because he was out of position.
Looked distinctly uncomfortable in the first half with Ferdi as an option, dwelling on the ball and losing possession. (Mind you anyone would have).
Wildly jumped in during the second half, whilst already on a yellow, luckily completely missing the player (otherwise definite second booking), as it was left us exposed.

It was good that we were attacking in the second half, as he consequently had little to do.

He was ok, nothing more, and actually Webster did more of note defensively whilst he was on….

In fact does anyone know if he’s injured? The important block he made before he went down was fantastic.

Yup. He's a little shit and thats how it is. Comfortable on the ball, lost without it. To me its not a question of "should this guy maybe be starting?" or something like that - just a manner of "could he fill in or should we do some Mengele shit with Wieffer or Baleba or someone?". I think the performance yesterday was decent enough to say: ok, lets go with the Igor for now.

To me it is clear that we tried to sign a defender this summer, and its almost equally clear to me that Igor would have been sacrificed for the new addition. Ultimately what likely happened was that we werent willing to go all in for a new defender without first shipping one out, and we werent desperate to sell without a new defender first coming in... and in the end nothing happened.

The fact that we made bids for Boscagli (27 years) and Smith (also 27) indicates to me that we havent found a new "THIS young man is our next uber-CB" which might also have contributed to not splashing cash on a defender.

I expect dramatic changes in defence next summer. Veltman has basically confirmed he's moving back to Amsterdam, Van Hecke will be a massive target for big clubs, Igor and Lamptey will likely leave then if not before. If Pervis is excellent we can't rule out him pushing for a final big move in his career.

Well, with Webster ?out, I don’t see we have a lot of choice.
I don’t agree about ‘decent enough’, but all opinions

You've highlighted a few mistakes, agree with those but they were cases where he got his timing wrong. Considering he's spent most of 2024 sitting on the bench I'll give him a little time to get into rhythm. You say he had nothing to do but we had 38% possession second half, our defence had lots to do. He's good on the ball, he's a left footer allowing Dunk to play his preferred side (and Dunk was totally immense in the second half, I'm not convinced he is slow, and most importantly, he looks an absolute beast.

Don’t disagree re Dunk.
I didn’t see us under pressure in the second half, and recall one meaningful attempt which Bart saved.
Of course Spurs piled forward at the end, but created nothing. It’s easy to let a team have possession and play in front of you.
He really isn’t that good on the ball, but yes, he is a beast, but that also means he is not as reactive when turned and is actually quite easy to play against (at this level).

As per my earlier post, with Webster out he is all we have, though I’d prefer Veltman, with Hinshelwood at RB.

Igor had a very good game yesterday when he came on, his passing and ease on the ball is an asset,. Even though he doesn't have much pace he has a footballing brain.
It’s certainly a game of opinions. For the record I’m Team @BUTTERBALL
