Love and Mercy is excellent, Paul Dano and John Cusack are both great as Brian Wilson but I think Paul Giamatti as Dr Eugene Landy deserves a lot of praise too. La Bamba, Walk The Line and Bohemian Rhapsody all deserve special mentions too.

Walk the Line for me too.

The Queen and Elton ones really didn't do it for me but Mrs GB is a fan of both.

What is Control? Spelt with a capital C?

And why might we struggle to look beyond it? I'm confused.

Because, as with The Sporanos being the default answer to:-

What's the Best TV Theme Tune?

I figured, as Control is absolutely smack bang in the middle of NSC's wheelhouse that would also be the default answer!!!!

For me it has to be Top Secret.

The story of how global Rock'n'Roll star Nick Rivers rose to prominence, then tried to break into the East German music scene; but became embroiled with the French Resistance trying to save a scientist, is an incredible tale.
Quite how his music career didn't take off even more after that I have no idea...he was a hero. His songs and performances were perfect for the 1950's SoCal "vibe" & this movie captures it so perfectly.

I often wonder what happened to Nick Rivers.

Thanks. I'd never heard of it. I have heard of Joy Division though.

It's a good film, but the casting of Alex Maria Lara as Annik Honore is a bit misleading.

In real-life, the rest of the band used to refer to Annik as 'the Belgian boiler'...

Saw Mavis Staples at a music festival just last week. She's still got it, even at 82...

We’ve seen her twice over the last 3 or 4 years, last time at the Union Chapel in London.

She’s inspirational, but what also gets me is her backing band - the drummer and bassist doing a fairly good imitation of Stax at its best!

I iked the Sunday afternoon cheese of Jimmy Stewart in The Glenn Miller Story and Gary Busey in the Buddy Holly one.

Coal Miner's daughter is obviously worth a mention for Cissy Spacek's performance. Most of the are rubbish, but I'm a sucker for a cheap biopic. I like that one about the Beatles that has the fans protesting about Pete Best being chucked out and then being completely won over by Ringo playing a very basic drum beat for a very long time. A few years before 'Behind The Candlebra' I remember seeing a made for TV biopic of Liberace. I presume that it was an official one because the most entertaining thing about it was the convoluted ways in which it attempted to hide his sexuality.

If you actually want a good film then Mike Leigh's 'Topsy Turvey' about the making of the Mikado is excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite having no interest in G&S.

I won't bother with Baz Lurhmann's Elvis, I have disliked everything I've ever seen of his. I'm looking forward to this though:

I saw a new one about Beatles maybe 5-8 years ago and at some point at the same time one about Serge Gainsbourg.

Both were quite shit and I've stayed away from musical biopics ever since. Though if someone makes one about George Clinton or Funkadelic, I'll have a look.

Behind My Eyes
So much of Ian Curtis was about his haunted pale eyes. Could Riley not have at least worn contacts, or do they not work with dark brown eyes? My mate Tim is the absolute spit of Curtis in physicality, mood and demeanour, unfortunately he didn’t audition.

um .... wasn't Control black and white though?
