So was five not enough for De Zerbi then?! How many did he want!
I think the difference was not the number of signings but the profile of them.

De Zerbi would want players in that 27-30 age range that just don't fit with the way we do (much of) our business.

I've not seen that article, but I was told that the club will be looking to make five "first-team-ready" signings this summer.

Seems to largely match Naylor's info.
Yes, looking at the market, our team and the finances... as I've said elsewhere we're going to spend a lot of money, at least £100m.

This is exciting..... But at the same time, it's hard not to be sceptical as you would think if this is true RDZ would have stayed on.
Roberto De Zerbi was quite clear that he wanted to sign players he picked. He talked a lot about how we watches videos of players etc but that the club has a different way. And you could sort of read through the lines that he didn't like it.

The next manager will get a lot of support from Tony, as would Roberto at this stage if he didn't think he was God, but we're not signing any more Dahouds and Igors. "Fun" experiment but we're going back to the algorithms.

Yer that's a fair point.

There was a mini documentary made recently about RDZ by the premier league. There was quite a big clue in there where he said the shakthar owner was the only one he really got on with as he let Roberto choose the signings!

RDZ's arrogance got the better of him in that role as well where he played real Madrid at home and went balls to the wall and lost 5-0.

Maybe he will learn in the next job he takes ;)

If they're 'first team ready' then their age should be irrelevant. If that is the case and it is the age profile of the players he didn't like, he really needs to have a rethink about his coaching philosophy.

Out of interest, the starting line up for Champions League Winners Real Madrid on Saturday, didn't have one player between the ages of 26 and 30. Valverde at 25 and Rudiger at 31 the nearest but then the rest 23 and under or 32 and over.

Sounds like a lot, but losing Lallana, Fati and presumably Dahoud and Undav,
plus the right back we've needed for a while. That makes sense.
I think we might be losing a defender or two

Lamptey is the one at risk as he enters the last year of his contract. I don’t think we can extend it given his injury record. Might be best to take the cash this summer.

If Milan come in for Igor as rumoured, would we stand in his way? He was RDZ’s man, a new manager may require a different skill set.

My guess;
Young centre back: Adamo Nagala
Right Back ; Juanlu Sanchez
Midfielder; Kieran Dewsbury- Hall
Potential winger; Jota Silva or Loum Tchaouna.
My guess:

Young left footed centre back to replace Igor?
Right back: Suguwara to replace Lamptey
Midfielder all rounder: KDH/O’Reily
Midfielder DM: Chiloham Onuoha
Left footed RW: McAtee or Hutchinson

If Potter is to come back, the emotional gymnastics I will have to go through to turn up and not boo the **** will inevitably make me lose some passion for the club. I had this with Micky Adams return, and I loved Micky Adams, but felt Dick Knight had shafted Wendy Wilkins to do it. For me Wilkins had done exceptionally well with a young and less than stellar side, and we seemed to be improving week on week over the season.
DK made the decision for something other than footballing reasons, maybe thought MA coming back might sell a few more season tickets, but it was a scummy move, and I couldn't love my club quite as much as before because of it. On top of that, MA served up the worst season of football I have witnessed as an Albion fan. It took TB taking over to allow me to be fully supportive again, and I don't want to lose that.
If Potter comes back, he had better perform, I think there is more at stake than next seasons league position if he doesn't.

But England could...
If they did, they wouldn't come for him during a season, which was always the major problem with his departure. Chelsea won't give a f***, might even see it as an added benefit to screw a rival over whilst getting an upgrade.

o’Reilly is a good call. Definitely think we’ve enquired and is perhaps more realistic than KDH.

Do we stand in anyones way if the fee matches or exceeds the club valuation?

Definitely exciting and fits in with what was said after our record financial results were announced. Bloom is ready to invest heavily in making us a side capable of competing for the Euro spots regularly rather than just competing for the top 10. That would definitely require more first team ready players while other promising youngsters get more experience with less pressure than they faced last season.

I’m guessing these will still be very much data driven signings rather than the coach, this is probably where it fell apart for RDZ and the club, although I do think his reluctance to sign a new contract was also a contributing factor, we aren’t going to go heavy backing a coach who still has a relatively low compensation clause.

Agree. To the extent that I could have typed every word of that myself

I think that is one for the next manager.

But as far as Igor and Lamptey go, I have seen no evidence that the Brazilian is as good as JPvH and Dunk (that is the level we need) and no evidence the Englishman can start more than a dozen or so games per season.

I would respectfully suggest that you stop being so precious.

People generally make decisions for the right reasons, with the information they have at the time. Falling out of love with your football club because someone makes a decision that doesn't go the way they hoped it would, is quite odd behaviour. Unless of course you have never ever made a single mistake in your own career, of course, in which case crack on.

I’m not convinced that Wendy had the dressing room. In fact, I am told he didn’t.
on the Potter front - you might just have to put the big boy pants on and deal with it.
