As everyone else seems to be asking for advice I guess it is my turn. I am off to Iceland on Sunday (no jokes about the supermarket chain please). Anyone got any good advice ? Where to go, what to do etc

The frozen food aisle is probably good if you're looking to get out of the heat...

Sorry, I'll get my coat.

No jokes about the supermarket chain?

Arse. Okay, try these for size

Why do people in Hafnafjordur take a step ladder with them when they go shopping?
Because they have heard that prices are on the up and up

Why does the tide come in an out in Hafnarfjordur?
Because the first time it came in and saw the people of Hafnarfjordur it got real scared and rushed out. Still comes back twice a day to see if they are still there!

Why do people in Hafnarfjordur sneak ever so quietly past the chemists?
So as not to wake the sleeping pills up.

If you buy rolls of turf for laying a new lawn in Hafnardfjordur you'll get a shock.
On the wrapping it says: Please lay green side up!

Why do people in Hafnarfjordur open their milk cartons there and then in the shop?
Because the carton reads: Open here!

Last year the brightest person in Hafnarfjordur moved to Reykjavik, the capital. IQ levels dropped in both places.

Hafnarfjörður is now arguably considered to be the rock n' roll capital of Iceland (a title that once belonged to Keflavík). Popular Icelandic bands such as Botnleðja, Sign, Úlpa, Lada Sport and Jakobínarína all trace their origins to the town of Hafnarfjörður.

Hafnarfjörður is known as one of the most popular residences for elves in Iceland.

Out of 6000 voting immigrants in Iceland almost 3000 live in Hafanrfjörður, therefore it has Ireland's largest immigrant population.

I've never been to Iceland and have no particular plans to go. Even so, I'm happy to share what I know about the place.

1. It has the world's oldest parliament.

2. The language has changed so little that modern Icelanders can read 1,000-year-old Icelandic sagas with perfect facility

3. They really like chess. Which is one reason why Fischer and Spassky played the world title match their in the 70s.

4. There is a Hardy Boys adventure set in Iceland. It revolves around an American astronaut having been kidnapped. But they get him back.

5. There's some sort of fish dish which involves taking the fish, pissing on it, burying it underground and then eating it two months later. (As I say, I have no plans to visit Iceland).

How did you go about arranging that and how did you know what you wanted to do before you went please?

Most of the advice that I could give would be for independent budget travel ie those staying in either YHA's or the wonderful Icelandic practise of SLEEPING BAG ACCOMMODATION, self Catering and cheap car hire etc, However

Reykjavik eh, youre in for a real treat.

Sights from Reykjavik

The Blue Lagoon, is unmissable, there is a regular bus service from the centre of reykjavik, (forget even thinking about climbing into a taxi anywhere , they are hideously expensive). It is about 12 or 15 quid to get in but it is very nice just lazing around in the milky blue hot water. They have also introduced a steam bath and Sauna to the complex. Don't miss

The golden circle, (geysir and gullfoss plus some volcanic craters and some) is a popular daytrip and well worth it.

Thats the nature stuff

Now the Meat of the matter. No matter where you are in Iceland everyone under a certain age will be trying to get to Reykjavik for the 'Reykjavik Weekend' this is very well known in Iceland. Every weekend young Icelanders get get totally wrecked, especially large groups of women and its all gets very unrestrained, (a bit like Faliraki, but without the humidity). If youre in downtown Reykjavik you WILL get caught up in it all, be prepared to be shocked

eating out in Cafes is not overly expensive, but formal restaurants will require you to take out a second mortgage. In bars Beer is around 4 to 6 quid a pint/half litre

finally I'm very envious, its one of my favourite places in the world, but Ive never been in the summer only in March and April, and a week long trip to Reykjavik is an ideal introduction to the country

1 Read up on lonely planet and rough guide.

2 Booked a 'lucky fare' on Icelandair via the web ( around a 120 quid )

3.Booked YHA ,s around the country (very clean and comfortable and around 12 quid a night each, but the advantage is you can cook for yourself and thereby reduce costs considerably. Some of them even have hot-tubs

4. booked car hire with auto europe,

5. And where there wern't any YHA's, we stayed in sleeping bag accomodation. This is where B&B's and some hotels will reduce their prices on empty rooms by 70% if you bring a sleeping bag. they will strip the bed of quilts and you just put your sleeping bag down (sorted). Stayed in a great hotel in Myvatn and Geysir by doing this, (This thing is peculiar to Iceland)

Also the icelandic NHS has a reciprocal health agreement our own NHS, so bring your E111 if you dont have travel insurance. 2 years ago my oldest son broke his leg in 2 places when he jumped off a rock in a lavafield and the treatment received was 1st rate

Its called Hakarl,

its decomposing shark meat, the brown meat is truly awful (tastes of Ammonia) the white meat is bearable if you're pissed. Even most Icelanders hate it

Best avoided

I went there with the wife earlier this year for a long weekend.

I thought the place was - in a fairly good way - very weird. The people are just odd, not unpleasant. This can come across as rude, but I don't think it is meant to be. Maybe they are simply all like Bjork. Perhaps it's the lack of daylight hours.

Everything is hugely expensive when eating out. I completely stuffed up when, for our one 'big meal' we promised ourselves, I got the local speciality 'puffin feast', which was disgusting.

Went on a couple of good tours out to see the place where the tectonic plates meet, and to see all the geyser-stylee things, and the Blue Lagoon was very good.

You can probably get yourself a decent wool jumper. And it's not as cold as you might imagine because of the Gulf Stream. And that's about it.
