Do the BBC have any broadcasting rights to the commentary of games.

yes. via local bbc station agreements directly with the club

from football league

BBC Local

BBC Local Radio have a score flash agreement with The Football League enabling BBC Local radio stations to transmit goal and match reports at all Football League grounds. In addition, some BBC Local radio stations have agreements with their local Football League club to broadcast live match commentaries.

Hey Richie - you're an Albion/football/media type, yeah? You've been given enough ideas in this thread alone to set yourself up as Brighton's answer to Richard Branson. Get IN there - before somebody else does. It's a definite GLARING gap in the market

If only I knew some with some cheeky broadcasting facilities I would LOVE to.

Didn't hear the phone-in with Mike Ward, but judging from his column he has to be the singular least funny man I have ever read. I cannot believe he still gets a column in a programme - every week he tries to be funny and it's actually embarrassing just how poor his writing and humour are. It's like the club feels indebted to him just because he's a journalist who decided to suddenly start supporting the Albion - I could find a lot more knowladgeable and funnier people without looking very long!

So the basic answer is that Southern FM or Juice or Radio Reverb could not commentate on the game live. Just a thought could they start a commentary at 3.05 on a Saturday so it is not actually live but to all intents and purposes it would appear so to the listeners

I'm a big Harty fan and want him back as soon as possible.

That said, John Byrne is streets ahead of Mike Ward. Frankly I am not sure what the point of Ward is? His Albion "history" is very limited, his football knowledge is no better than an armchair fan and he is about as funny as having the shits.

Get Harty back, its been long enough now that the point has been made. I really can't see how when two presenters have said the same thing one is brought back and the other isn't.

If only there was a decent pirate radio station in Sussex. Not only could they do a proper phone in but we might get a station which played proper music as well.

We must be able to borrow some chav-up-a-tower-block's pirate D&B set-up on a Saturday afternoon? The more I think about this the more brilliant your idea sounds.

Do the BBC have any broadcasting rights to the commentary of games.

With league games only the rights to broadcast in the local area.

The Football League themselves own the copyright to the broadcasts.

As part of the deal the club (being part of the PremiumTV contract) can then take the commentary and exploit it... ie sell it over the internet.

This explains it better than I can

BBC SPORT | TV/Radio Schedule | Sports rights for BBC Local Radio

"The reason we cannot put our excellent local radio football commentaries on BBC sites is that the copyright for them is owned by the sports rights holder, the Football League.

"They effectively 'license' us to do radio commentaries, for which we pay annual fees direct to the clubs.

"The clubs themselves own the rights to put their audio commentaries of their matches on the internet, not the BBC.

"They have all chosen to sign a deal with a company that run their websites.

"When the BBC and a football club agree a commentary deal, reflected in this is the provision for a club to request to use this commentary on their website.

"The BBC is under no obligation to provide this, but usually does so at no cost to us.

"Nor does the BBC make any money from this - it is part of a contract with a football club.

"The Football League's website partner has recently developed technology to allow for "pay per view" elements of club websites - this is increasingly the case with websites worldwide.

The cup is a different deal and the BBC are allowed to play it over the internet.

Broadcast rights to sporting events are very much tied down these days and you'll find that even on the internet version of Radio 5 live - when you access it abroad the Premiership commentary is taken out.

Even the league table is copyrighted...

Talksport were a bit naughty a few years ago when they were "commentating" on television pictures of Euro 2000. They didn't have the rights to do live commentary at all.

From what I remember they had crowd sound effects going in the background to give the event a bit of atmosphere..!

Juice is the answer to your question, re: pirate style music from outside the bland 'rock & pop' genre.

Their 'Lazy Sunday afternoon' shows are quality and I receive them fine on my little DAB radio up on my allotment in our fair town

I can't seem to get Juice on tinternet though as I've tried accessing their Roots Garden (reggae) on there but can't get past the totally radio franchise type thingy.

I agree that the phone in needs to be on analogue radio as I too believe that most people listen following commentaries or on the way home from withdean in the car ( well I certainly do anyway).

What about commercial radio stations like Southern FM etc, could they obtain permission for next season instead of the BBC. If they could and started making sounds now the BBC would possibly jump.

no.
that's a contract that either the BBc or the FL via the club would have to walk away from.............

although if you were to look at Leeds United matchday radio coverage.......

I would love Harty on the phone-in again.

Regarding the complaints, the people that did complain were well within their rights to do so. I seem to remember that most posters on here thought that the comments were ill-considered at best. I don't understand why a few posters feel the need to pick on one poster who has already publiclly said that they did not complain.

Anyway, moving on, I think that the phone in needs Harty back to survive. He has clearly been punished and the one time that I spoke to him (granted it was a couple of years ago), he seemed like a thoroughly decent chap.

I really wish a line could be drawn under this whole incident, both at SCR and on NSC.

Richard Nixon denied Watergate for months - Bill Clinton denied sleeping with Monica Lewinski............catch my drift??!!!
