Ian Brown (The Greatest) review, discuss...

Lifted from an afternoon paper here reviewing his best of album:

Ian Brown is one of the most overrated men in rock music. With a toneless voice, massive ego and primary school lyrics, it's amazing he's not the guy collecting your garbage. Yet he has the gall to to release a great hits package. Gotta love the hubris. Don't bother with this one.

Discuss.....

I was a fan of Golden Greats and his work with the Stones.

Totally and utterly agree. He is a knob.

yep totally agree hes talentless, all his decent songs are written for him and John Squire carried the Stone Roses on his own !!

Sounds about right to me. The one time I saw him live (albeit it as a support act) he played an absymal set. He started throwing stuff into the crowd, and a full bottle hit a girl near me. Got booed offstage, came back on, and was escorted off again by security.

If it hadn't been for John Squire the Roses wouldn't have been any good. He can't sing, can't dance but does a good impression of a monkey.

Bloke cannot sing for shit, saw the Stone Roses and he sounded bloody awful, I can only imagine how much time they spent f***ing about with his voice for the albums.

That said he will always be a part of the best indie album ever recorded and because of that he is a legend.

Total horse shit. Brown goes on to produce a top selling album. Squire forms the Seahorses. Brown goes on and delivers a furthur 3 albums, all different musically and is constantly innovative. Then goes on to release a justified greatest hits album. Squire disbands the Shirehorses.

I think it'll be hard to get a 'greatest' album off him. "Er, it's got 'Love is the Law' on it. That's about it"

The only one of the four who doesn't want to reform the Roses is Ian Brown as he doesn't fcuking need to - he's doing well enough artistically and comercially not to bother dredging up the past.

Justified? The blokes had 3 top ten singles. Hardly a massive success.

Pink Floyd have had 2. I don't think the charts count for shit.

I would agree that the guy can't sing for shit though!!

I think Ian Browns quality - his voice (and his attitude problem) has come along leaps and bounds and his recent live performances have been brilliant.
Its so nice to here stone roses songs live again.
I've liked all his solo albums.

I suppose it's a bit morrissey and marr - everyone thought that Marr made the smiths what they were, but then mozza went off and sold stacks of records as a solo artist. Marr did electronic and a few side projects but not in the same league as before.

All about Squire innit.

Absolutely not, the magic of the Roses was proabbly more about Brown than it was Squire. I doubt the Roses would have been as successful if they didn't have one of the best frontmen in the last 25 years.

His singing is not always the best, but he has a presence and not many singers, no matter how well they can sing, have that.

Plus - the argument about post Roses careers is a good one. And that's a very good comparison with The Smiths, Tricky.
