I think some people need to lower their expectations ahead of next season...

Well in Gus's own words we have to improve each season, or he'll go elsewhere, so by that reckoning we need to finish higher than 10th or he'll be off !
No shit sherlock !

if we are going to do as-well as this season we need 5 or 6 quality signings

Certainly.

But the fact that Craig Davies, a player outed from the club by a few fans, scored 3 more goals than our £3million signing makes it a bit concerning just what is going to be brought in. Vicente and Buckley have been brilliant, not doubting that, but so they should be for the money they cost us.

Always said Davies had it in him, shame.

I think the op is right. With our 30,000+ stadium and 20,000 season ticket holders, with a chairman who has stumped up the best part of £120miliion quid on the Amex, new academy, etc etc...I think we should all be well pleased with just surviving in this league.....Christ on a bike we have some born losers among our rank..Thank f*** Tony Bloom is not one of them.

They would have spunked £120m on players and we'd be like Pompey-

Why does everyone go on about Pompey, or West Ham/ Leeds/ Leicesters wage bill etc etc as some sort of defence of our poor end to the season. How about lets talk about Blackpool(two seasons ago) or Birmingham being skint and releasing 15 players last summer....People are always looking for an excuse or a scapegoat. I can assure everyone that a certain Mr Bloom will not be lowering his expectations so why should the fans?

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I'd be happy with midtable or safety, but the mad part of my heart beats toward a wish for the play-offs. I'm not one for predictions really, as what the f*** do i know, but in a dream or two i'd imagine 3 guaranteed decent signings for this division, with 3 others a combination of youth development and chance. An experienced enough midfielder who completely rules the centre of the park with a good enough touch not to take our breath away but more intelligent with positional sense and physical imposition, a striker who has the might to out-muscle the bulky and sturdy back lines this division is replete with and knows where the net is and a goalkeeper who'll lead behind Greer. I can Mattock joining and other possibly peripheral creatures, but that straight spine of the team will be reinforced with some unjellylike figures to begin to rule the roost.
A lot of team-building for Gus may depend on Vicente's decision and how long we, or he really, waits for it. I don't necessarily think we'd gain a place with his retention, but it will make a difference in how we put things together and keep everyone happy and involved. And also might with who we can attract thanks to the promise of playing alongside him.
I'm still agog at how well we've done and have no premiership demands. We've been amazing and all i want is for our intentions of ball-retention and fluid play and team solidarity to remain. We have to be a unit. It's what made us who we are, even if our identity feels short-lived thus far.

I think in fairness, while Birmingham released 15 players, they also had a lot of Premier League experience in their team such as Curtis Davies, Boaz Myhill and Nikola Zigic. We can't compete with that at the moment and actually barely had any Championship experience before this season. This applies to all the teams above us and a number of the ones below us. This is what we need to go and buy in the summer. Reading went and bought Jason Roberts in January while we had to bring in loans like Paynter and Vokes up front. I have confidence that our budget this summer will reflect this as Bloom has Premier League ambitions but we do need to realise how well we have done to compete with teams like Leicester and be above the likes of Ipswich, Leeds and Forest.

We have a budget to stick to and wont break it-i am sure we could find more than will be supplied in this summers transfer budget but that would not stay true to the long term plans-

come on £22m on a couple of players or an Academy? which is really best for us..

Gus has many reasons to stay-his age alone is a major factor

You've completely missed the point. Well done. I'm not saying we shouldn't be aiming for the top 2 but people seem to think after a good season we're going to steamroll the league if we make a few good signings.

I think you are wrong we are not ready for the 90 million windfall that comes with promotion to the PL,what the f*** would Tony want with all that money.NSC are right we need to wait a few years, let Barnes Navs Painter Dicker Sparrow & Ankergren enjoy playing at the Amex because they played well for us in the 3rd division,if we had got promotion Barnes Navs Painter Dicker Sparrow Ankergren would all have to go that would not be fair on them would it..

Well he had better stats than CMS so what does that make him ?

Point proven.

Darius Henderson scored almost DOUBLE the amount of goals.

Adam Le Fondre scored 12 goals in 17 starts, people on here have been raving about him for years. He cost 300k, 1/10th of CMS, and yes, he went to Reading but there were plenty of oppurtunities to nick him.

Emile f***ing Sinclair has scored more than CMS, and was signed for peanuts from Macclesfield.

Troy Deeney, 500k, 11 goals.

Worrying thing is I could quite easily continue, we paid WELL over the odds, everyone knew it at the time deep down, some just got carried away with the whole idea of the transfer and used that as a defence.

We have paid well over the odds for CMS and what surprises me is Bloom being a good poker player should not have shown his hand straight away.

Tony will dig deeper this season that is a fact, if you crave the success he does then you will have too, ( but to a certain extent only)
It will always be a very tough division to get out of and stay in and thats every year, year in year out !!
We have to be cautious about spending money as we don't want to end up in the position Portsmouth have SKINT, IN ADMINISTRATION AND RELAGATED !! because of spending stupid amounts of money.
I can imagine the "we must do so much better brigade" on here whining like little bitches if in 3-6 years time we were in admin, potless, and relegated because we did exactly that.
Again ! Some people on here need to get real and remember exactly the shit we have been through the last 15 years !!

We were talking about that in the pub when we got back from the game.

It really has cost us years in under-investment and will take around 5 years in my view till we are back where we were.

Exactly, and as the poster above you says, we ended up 2 points ahead of Derby and Watford. Look at the squads they have and the money they've spent and that gives you another view on things, but we've still done well to finish 10th IMO. But the players we've spent BIG money on have largely failed to live up to expectations, Buckley apart. Hoskins cost us a lot of money, Lua Lua has hardly featured, Ryan Harley, CMS, and again Vincelot has hardly played.

Blackpool, Cardiff, Boro, Reading... all have picked up players on the cheap compared to us (Le Fondre, Jutkievitz, Kenny Miller, Matt Phillips, Kevin Phillips etc etc), or on free transfers, none of them spunked £1m transfer fee's over last summer. That seems the way to go. I'd much rather us spend a bit more on wages to get players LIKE Jason Roberts on a free, than to go and spend £3 million on Jordan Rhodes or others.

Only quoted that liine, but agreed with everything else you've said. You're quote backs up my point about some of the players we've purchased, we paid well over the odds, almost desperate prices for some players which suggests we struggled to bring in certain names, and it's a bit worrying the sort of prices we're paying considering the return on such players.
