I would not want to be a lorry driver. It must be a bloody difficult job, especially when you have drop offs and you have cars blocking you every where you go and cars not giving way, judging your distance.

And it must be even worse when driving in conditions like this. Its scary enough in a car, when you hit black ice, imagine what it is like in a lorry.

Having had an old Group 2 licence and driven 8 wheeelers I always thought that it is a lot easier to drive a lorry in bad conditions because you are high up and can see all around you plus of course you have the added protection. What has made it difficult is modern legislation which stops lorry drivers doing their jobs as efficiently and also restricts the speed of lorries.

Having said that I am glad that I stopped driving lorries when I did some 20 years ago. After doing it full time I kept my licence and drove lorries part time when I had my pubs to get me out of the pub for the odd day.

Far from me to get in the way or take sides from 2 of the worst posters on NSC having a scrap but BG you realy are talking some shit and passing it off as fact as usual aren't you! What an absolute crock of shit.

I literally cannot remember the last time I saw a RTA involving a lorry or even a van, although yes you hear about some major ones from time to time. How can you possibly claim the majority of accidents on the roads are caused by them? :wozza:

I'm meant to be getting a lift to East Grinstead this evening.

Should I make my excuses and forget about it?

Thing is with lorry drivers - they have such low margins now, they are driving beyond their allowed time and often in conditions they should have pulled over in.

Ok so you're driving along in your lorry and the snow starts and you continue on, but if you plough on into known snow and ice which has been there a day or so, you're an idiot and should lose your licence.

Don't put yourself down mate. I bailed out because when BG makes up his mind on something it automatically becomes fact in his eyes. Whether it be driving, Kuipers or Harveys.

You obviously do not drive around the M25 very often or listen to traffic reports on the local radio.

spot on, i worked for UPS for 6 months. it was one of the worst jobs ive ever had. they made us drive these old beasts whatever the weather . i used to leave the deopt at 730 am and drive without a break doing quite hard manual work till about 7 at night on my own. during that time i was doing a drop every 5 minutes, it really was pure hell. i lost 2 stone in that 6 months .

we were so busy wed drive without belts on and quite frankly drive very badly simpky cos we were in such a huge rush. miss your targets and youd get hauled up in front of the boss.

DONT EVER WORK FOR UPS

I was at East Hoathly when UPS took over, then moved to Lowfield Heath for a few weeks. I quit then as the hours were too long.

I do alot of driving around the south east for work and I see some shocking behaviour from lorry drivers.

On wednesday one decided to drive into me whilst I was passing him in the middle lane. He must've been inches from hitting the side of my car causing me to swerve into the outside lane. I gave a long beep of the horn and returned to the middle lane, but not content with trying to kill me the stupid c**t then decided to drive right up behind my car flashing his lights and beeping his horn as if it was my fault for being in his way.

That isn't an isolated incident, I see stuff like that happen all the time. I'm not saying that the percentage of shit drivers is any higher amoungst lorry drivers than it is for cars, but it makes it that much more scary when then vehicle about to hit you is 18 tonnes.

TO be fair there are also a lot of car drivers who are completely clueless when it comes to driving around long or heavy vehicles in bad weather or not.

Most weekends of the racing season, we are in a LWB high top transit camper towing a trailer with a 750kg race car up and down the country. So we're a little less than 4 tonnes laden. We're never particularly fast so often get overtaken. The amout of times someone screams past us, and then cuts in front of us so we have to brake heavily is unbelievable. How quickly do you think we can stop 4 tonnes behind you - fools!

Having people not give us room on roundabouts too is another pain, the think they can undertake us on 2 lane roundabouts, how long does it take to give us a little room, before you can then pass us safely - but everyone is more important and in a hurry...

I drive a MWB Transit around and car drivers usual women find that they have to overtake me as they feel uncomfortable behind me then they cut in and then decrease there speed by 10mph so i overtake again and so on.
Worst of all is the car drivers who pull out in front of me while i'm doing about 60 just because they don't wanna be behind me, i don't carry as much as 4 tonnes but enough to be uncomfortable on the brakes and distribute my load around the back of the van -i t is very annoying.
