The kicking of the fags is the first objective as the serious training cannot start without this. I intend to start the running on 1/10 and beef up the walking before then.

Bollox Uncle, you can still be a fit athelete and smoke. A friend of mine used to smoke a 20 pack of Marlboro red a day while representing Sussex at hockey. Get back on the fags and stop being such a lightweight!

well done

I gave up 22 years, 6 months, 14 days and 13 hours ago and never give it a thought...........

seriously it's a bit like giving up booze - you have to be committed to never having another one because if you do it will be like you never gave up. Stick at it and be proud of yourself.

Like an alcholic, you will always be a smoker. Sooner you realise that, the sooner you will get off the fags for good.

I don't believe that for a second, it's not the same thing at all. I smoked, gave up and have never been tempted to have one again ... but if I did want to, I'm sure I could quite happily have just one, without needing to carry on. Very different to alcohol in my view.

Of course, as an "ex-smoker" you can be more than self-righteous when people around you smoke.

You really think you could have another fag and not get anything out of it?

I gave up smoking in Feb 1985 and drinking booze in Apr 1994 , its all about willpower and knowing that having just a fag or a Stella puts you back to square one.

That's not really the point is it, anyone who's never had a ciggie in their life would get a rush first time they smoked, that doesn't make them a smoker. With alcoholism, you can't "just have one" (or so I'm told).

A mate of mine was diagnosed with throat cancer 3 years ago. After radiotherapy, chemotherapy, having the tumour injected with an experimental herpes virus and a subsequent operation to remove what was left of the tumour he is, thankfully, in remission. He was a smoker and had given up the same time as me, almost 10 years ago. A visit to the Royal Marsden is a sobering experience, believe me.

Well done, it's 29 years ago last Budget Day for me [& her], never regretted it & just smile at all that cash we'd have burnt & the potential health problems we would probably be facing now!

I know I couldn't

The first ten times I gave up smoking then "just had one" proved it

Similarly each time I tried to give up it was the overriding thought “I’d never have another fag again syndrome” so each time I would slip back.

I still regard myself as a smoker but just taking a break from it so I can have a fag if I want it. Its been 12 years since I last had one, but I’m still a smoker, just choosing to not to at the moment, worked for me.
