Like an alcholic, you will always be a smoker. Sooner you realise that, the sooner you will get off the fags for good.

1 year 2 months gone for me.

Good luck and just keep going. Before you know it a week would have gone, then a month, then a year.

I don't think that's true. I haven't smoked for more than 12 years and I can definitely say I am no longer a smoker.

Anyway all the best US. It's hard work but it if you really want it you'll do it.

As someone above said, a lot of it is in the mind, once you've challenged that you won't look back. Make sure when you get the urge you eat something healthy, fruit and yoghurt helped me, otherwise you'll turn into a great big lard bucket. Going down the pub may be a bit easier now that smoking is banned inside, you just make sure you don't go outside with the others when they go out.

After a while you'll notice the stink of cigarettes on others and it will disgust you. Stick aside the money you'd normally spend on a pack of fags, let it grow a bit, then buy something you really want and will value.

I'm twenty two years without a smoke and near enough don't drink anymore, which allows me to run round a football pitch in my 40s. You'll soon find the exercise you do will negate the stress and the knowing that you can do it will give you that automatic high.

Good luck and keep that mind focussed on not smoking, the next week or so will be the worst for cravings, once you've got past that the body and mind adjusts itself to not needing one.

That's not really the point is it, anyone who's never had a ciggie in their life would get a rush first time they smoked, that doesn't make them a smoker. With alcoholism, you can't "just have one" (or so I'm told).

For me its the same with fags. I could never just have one. I'd have to start smoking again.

Good Luck with that

I'm over eleven years in now

Be careful of the weight-gain thing

If you do regular training/exercise, I'm sure you'll be fine

This is a good point. Afetr not smoking for over one year I have put on 2.5 stone.

To be fair I started a 9.5 stone and I 6 foot tall. So I needed it.

You'll never get a new bird now Gareth. Women love a smoker.

take 10 deep breaths every hour for a few weeks - it is this "relaxing time" that people crave....the fag is just the talisman for this.

trust me.

Keep going and good luck with it, US.

Since the smoking ban in pubs I just can't be arsed to go outside and have a fag now. I'm only a social smoker anyway. The government have helped me cut down in that way but I've never craved a cigarette and got hooked on nicotine. Lucky I suppose.

I use a good website which gives you info everyday when you login to your computer!!!!

Graham - Free and Healing for One Month, Fifteen Days, 19 Hours and 48 Minutes, while extending my life expectancy 4 Days and 1 Hour, by avoiding the use of 1171 nicotine delivery devices that would have cost me £337.20.

Bit Yankee for me but the figures don't lie!!!

@Deanbha Go cold turkey!!!!!! Tried lots of times with help and never got this far!!
