It's funny, but I think it's fair to say that most western Europeans are fairly ignorant towards East European ethnic tensions owing to the fact that we were fed propoganda during the cold war that had us believe the soviet satellite states were one big homogenous lump - when in actual fact nothing could be further from the truth.

I've since found out that the majority of East European states deeply dislike Hungary (owing to the Austro-Hungarian empire at the turn of the century). The Romanians and Slovakians particularly hate the Hungarians - which always seemed odd to me. Afterall, you'd have thought that the Slovakians would dislike the Czechs (very similar language, and were the smaller, less wealthy partner in a two-nation state until a decade ago) more than anyone else. But no, they particlarly despise the Hungarians. I think there are a lot ethnic Magyars in Slovakia too.

So there we have it. It's not just the English, French and Germans who seem to be disliked by just about every other state that borders them!

My understanding is that the Germans have been invading every year throughout the cold war and beyond - a bit like we invade Spain. Are they as disliked as the guidebooks say? It certainly didn't seem the case when I was in Heviz last Easter, but that could have been because the main invasion hadn't started at that point.

They hate us, we hate them Except, of course Austria and Slovenia. We have 5 million hungarian under a foreign control, our ancient cities like Pozsony (Bratislva), Kassa (Kosice), Arad, Temesvár, Ungvár, Belgrád (!!!), Fiume (Rijeka) Kolozsvár etc. They are part of our nations history

Interesting - How long do you have to occupy a city before it becomes yours?
