FANS WILL STAY AWAY, CLAIMS SURVEY

More than 200,000 football fans will not renew their season tickets this summer, according to a survey released today.

The survey, conducted on behalf of Virgin Money, shows 29% of the country’s estimated 690,000 season ticket holders will not be renewing with the rising costs of following their team and the poor quality of football on offer the main reasons.

Nineteen per cent of Manchester United fans asked in the survey said they will not renew because of the cost, while 31% of Aston Villa season-ticket holders consulted said they will be absent next campaign because of the standard of football on display.

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters’ Federation, said: ‘‘We’ve been begging clubs to peg ticket price rises for ages now. It appears that if this research proves correct our worst fears will be proved correct.
‘‘Football in this country is simply pricing itself out of the market compared to other top European countries like Germany and Spain.
‘‘With the new money coming into football from the newly announced Premier League television deals there should be a price freeze on tickets at a minimum.’’

Virgin Money estimate the total spent per season by football fans across Britain is a staggering £8.8billion, with season-ticket holders spending an average of £1,875 each a season.

Percentages of season-ticket holders not intending to renew next season: Due to cost: Man Utd 19%, Birmingham 18%, West Brom 17%, Cardiff 16%, Portsmouth 14%.
Due to standard of football: Villa 31%, Millwall 29%, Wolves 28%, Southampton 27%, Sunderland 26%.
The survey was conducted by Football Fans’ Census, who interviewed a representative sample of 2,789 football fans online between April 12 and 23 on behalf.

Liked the fact that Cardiff and Millwall were high in this survey :lolol:

Phoned the ticket office to re new mine on Monday, explained that I'd lost my form and wanted to do it over the phone as I didn't want to lose my seat, was told no rush, I wont be losing it. Thats nice I thought, they have saved it for me, but then realised that I never gave them my name or any details, not looking as good as it could to be honest

I haven't renwed. First time since returning to Withdean. Just cant afford it at the moment. It also sickens me when on other forums you see how our prices compare to others. Our season ticket prices are so so so much higher than everybody elses. I know why but that doesn't help me pay for one!

I thought this thread was just about us. I was worried what a 'huge number' was. There can't be more than 4,500ish anyway!

I have not got a season ticket, nor have I ever had one at Withers, but I was at Uni for four years and made as many games as possible. This year and last I have ended up seeing most/all of them so I should have bought one :dunce: It is a shame we have such high prices but I understand why. But as Turkey says, that doesn't pay for it.

Don't forget ours includes travel. That saves me about £8 a game.

I realise that we in particular need the money.

But I do find myself wishing fervently that crowds WILL start to fall in the Premiership.

Season Ticket and matchday prices are already at outrageous levels- I appreciate there's such a thing as inflation, but the Taylor Report suggested a reasonable price for a ticket in an all seater stadium would be £8.00, and that actually allowed for inflation, if I remember correctly.

£49.00 to watch Chelsea v Bolton?

The same sort of price for a Tottenham or Arsenal game?

It's obscene, yet the clubs get away with it because they know they have a captive audience and a waiting list.

If that list started to waste away, they'd have to do something about it, ie reduce prices to somewhere vaguely close to acceptable levels. I hope Premiership fans desert the game in droves, and show the greedy chairmen/Sky directors what they can do with their prices.

But they won't :nono:

Only if you use - why can't we have a choice ?

Oh yeah, and I heard a Leeds fan contributing to this debate on Five Live on my way home.

He was complaining because his season ticket (for Championship football!) will cost him what he considers to be an extortionate £350.

£350!!

I only wish my crap-fest of a seat in the al-fresco delights of Withdean's League One surrounds was that cheap.

What is there to look forward to and make people renew?

Last time there was fight in the side and a real chance of going back up and a few decent signings including a certain Leon Knight.

This time went down with a wimper and cant even sort contracts out of players at the club all ready.

I know you love re-writing history when talking about your heroes Leon and Coppell but the reality was that at this stage the last time we got relegated, we were telling Rodger and Blackwell, both of whom proved useless to the cause the next season, that they'd have to take a wage cut, and Leon was some months off signing for this club. Remind me again who were the "useful signings" we'd made by the end of May???

Having said all that I'm trying to motivate myself to renew my season ticket but I can't justify it until I hear something just a bit inspiring about next season

I don't think the Albion do them. Maybe someone can correct me on that.

I believe the club's view is that if you're old enough to drink, then you're old enough to pay full whack!

Was the Leeds guy a student then? I missed that bit.
