Sssshhh we aren't going to get knocked out we have a team of amazingly talented players and our midfield is amazing despite them not being able to complete 4 passes without giving the ball away, we are going to WIN! :clap2: .........

By using it as an excuse to get my mate Rickdisgustingly drunk. And then get disgustingly drunk so I don't feel out of place despite not really giving a shit about the result.

Surely most of us have come to terms already with the realisation that this so-called team of "amazingly talented players" with its "amazing" midfield is, in fact, a figment of our collective, deluded imagination.

They don't deserve to win. When they go out, I'll simply think ... "Fair enough".

Well ......... it has the second best player in the world in it. The PFA Player of the year, and still (occasionally) one of the best dead ball specialists in the world, and a half-decent left sided midfielder. So I don't think it is imagination.

What we seem unable to do is to get them to play better than the sum of their collective parts.

But as to the question. If you have watched England in all the major championships (we have got to) over the years your reaction is going to be along the lines of "Hey-Ho".

I think I will probably creosote that fence.

Sup a few beers and move on to Munich as already planned. Do the same if it happens in Munich and stumble on to Berlin.

No skin off my nose, certainly haven't been spending my money to watch that drivel but on good beer, good company and the brothels.

I will be gutted for the rest of the day and then the following day wake up and look forward to the coming season following the mighty Albion, which at the end of the day is far more important in my eyes.

I tend to get very poorly after we get knocked out of tournaments.. even bordering on flu.. i think it's the destruction of optimism that causes it.

Some of us never swallowed the hype in the first place on the grounds that we've heard it all before. I stopped 'believing' in England in 1980. I genuinely believed we'd win the European Championships that year (because we had a team of 'world class' players, the envy of every other side and the best England team for years) - and we were utter crap. I'd always put our failure in the 70s down to bad management but it was in 1980 that I realised that, for a number of reasons, England did not produce great football teams.

Consequently as I've said before I'm really quite pleased with our performances. I never expected to win and we're actually playing better than I expected, probably becuase the players are a bit better than usual and a bit better than I gave them credit for.

So it's quite odd - unlike most people my expectations are actually higher than when we started! I think we've got a real chance against Portugal, and I shall be disappointed to lose. Prior to the start I thought quarter-finals was as far as we'd go but now I think we could go one game further.

So, if we get knocked out on Saturday I shall be upset, especially if we get conned by a load of cheating...... whatever the Portugese are. I shall have to try and remember that this was as far as I was expecting to go before a ball was kicked - but I doubt if that will be a consolation.

I shall be able to concentrate on Sussex's efforts to win four trophies.

In answer to Munkfish's final question, no - I coudn't give the slightest crap about the 3rd/4th place play off.

Agreed, have never watched it and won't, even if England are playing.
