Will feel disappointed for about half an hour, then I will have another beer and forget about it.

The 1/4 finals is our official FIFA/UEFA designated finishing place in any major tournament, and pretty much always has been, so anything more will be a happy bonus.

Well, I am ALWAYS severely pissed off when Brighton or England lose, no matter whether I expected them to or not, it's in my blood, I have this delusional single-minded focus as each match approaches, and no matter how bad the team has been previously, a wave of optimism and the feeling that this time, maybe, we'll win the match.

What do I do to get over the loss?, I go and play in the garden with my kids and try to forget that the match ever happened. Denial is a great thing!

Luckily my kids are young enough not to be effected in the same way I am (not for long though!)

Surely most of us have come to terms already with the realisation that this so-called team of "amazingly talented players" with its "amazing" midfield is, in fact, a figment of our collective, deluded imagination.

They don't deserve to win. When they go out, I'll simply think ... "Fair enough".

That is possibly the most negative thing you have ever posted on here, almost on a par with " we are never going to get Falmer" by yours truly.

What do you mean, they dont deserve to win. That is just crap. We have played 4 games, won 3 and drawn 1, letting in just 2 goals in one of the games. We are playing to our ranking, ie we have got into the last 8 on merit, not because we were lucky, but because we BEAT the teams in from of us.

If you are so negative about it, dont f***ing watch it and leave the support of the team to those who really do think we have a chance of winning it.

Bloody hell, it only comes around every 4 years and then people are whinging.

It would be nice for once to reach the semis knowing one big showing no matter who we play we are in the final.

That happened in 1990 and losing to Germany on penalties was a really bad feeling, i did not speak for hours.

Ahem! This is a question thread, so why barrack people who are just being realistic about our possibilities? Even Brazil, (yes, those "football gods" who play everyone off the park) have doubts, and certainly didn't fancy their chances last WC. We DID fancy our chances, then fell asleep v them - why? Why should everyone place complete faith in a group of blokes we don't know, have mostly never met, simply because they wear a t-shirt we feel a kinship with? Christ, they are even managed by a complete berk picked by a conglomerate of complete idiots!
Ah yes, glorious England will prevail......er.....like England expects and have always expected.

Some people are just going with their experience, and they are rightfully riddled with doubts just like every other country's fans. Don't be surprised and stop expecting everyone else to have some gung-ho belief not based on reality.

Personally I completely hope we win, and support the team. However, I wouldn't say we were particularly brilliant or heads and shoulders better than the competition around us....so far.
Yes we have a chance of winning it, but expectations should be tempered with the realisation that the best England side have to turn up and play out of their skins for the rest of the tournament, play fairly, have some luck, and not get a dodgy ref.

but at the end of the day, the point ed made was that England didnt "deserve " to win it.

That is what is so rediculous.

Is anyone saying Germany deserved to win it in Italy when they were dreadful all the way through the tournement and won the final by a very dubious penalty after Klinnsman had been shot by the Reading Sniper?

Or Brazil in USA 2002, when the final was absolutely dire and they won it on a penalty shootout?

In the WC it is all about results...not about playing pretty football and never has been. perhaps Brazil in the 1970 final is the only game anyone actually remembers as a classic...the majority of games are poor.

Actually that's one of the reasons I think the 3rd/4th place game is quite important. It's almost like a therapy session and it's a chance to say goodbye and bad luck to the team. I really enjoyed the game against Italy in 1990; as a match it was basically an unimportant friendly, who cares who finishes 3rd? But as a chance to all come together and comiserate after the shoot-out defeat it fulfilled a useful role. It was the last time that team played together and like I said it was a chance to say goodbye after a month of highs and lows.

Yes. No-one has EVER fluked into winning the world cup. Get real.

This "unless you say it's our divine right to win it, you're nothing a traitor" horse manure is the tawdry partner in crime of the age-old "if we lose, it's because we were cheated" adage of the daft - both are utterly risible and as unrelated to the facts as chalk to cheese.

I hope England win obviously, but when they go out I'll be pissed off for the rest of the evening, but then I can get on with some work once its all over.

the WC isn't really very good for productivity for me !

The worst part is obviously immediately after you get knocked out when you cant quite believe it has happened. You think of all the chances that went begging, and the if only's start running through your mind.

Please spare us this time !

I see no reason why we shouldn't win it.

I think at this stage, most of what has gone before is pretty irrelevant as the 90 (or 120 or 120+pens) minutes come into focus.

The team hasn't set the world alight but the DO deserve to be there by virtue of winning enough matches. Would they have got there if they had played better teams? Who knows? What I do know is that if my grandma ahd balls then she'd be my graddad.

Regarding what I'll do if we go out - if we've played well and lost then will probably be a bit upset, maybe tearful if it's pens. If we've not acquitted ourselves at all and have deserved to lose then it'll just be a shrug of the shoulders and on with the drinking.

If we win, however, I expect to go 'missing' for days! :clap2: :drink: :drink: :clap2:
