That is stupid though. Why should two people doing the same job have to pay differing amounts of tax!?

IF we NEED to pay for education, do it one way only, retrospectively. If people now pay £9k a year, EVERYONE who went should have to pay £9k a year.

So anyone who ever passed a driving test should be sent a letter demanding the cost of todays test.

Idiot.

No absolutely not. But when the Government shits on people tempers run high.

Go and read the thread from the begining, this has already been done.

I did mate.

The bottom line is the Government make many people angry, upset, etc but we don't all spend the day f**king about in London. We've all been there we know what its like and we'd all swap three more years of student life for three years of working for a living.

I have employed many people, with degrees, packing things, making things and carrying out other work that it takes fifteen minutes to train them on ... why? Mainly because they can't be arsed to do anything else and have no interest in the subject for which the degree was obtained.

Possibly becuase there are so many degrees at various levels of skill and need within society, because so many want to go to Uni for the laugh and because Uni's make money out of students ... the whole thing needs a shake up and some people should just get a job instead of delaying for three years tossing about whilst building up a massive debt ..

Let the binfest commence

Generally students do lack common sense. It's something you can't learn at college.
I'd rather have common sense than an A-Level, but that's just me.

You sir are wise beyond your years!

Wanna job?

In all seriousness though most students go to university because they don't know what they want to do in life so spend 3 years getting slashed up only to get a job doing something that has absolutely no relevance to what they studied.

Why should I have to pay for that?

When I turned 18 banks were throwing money at people and I got myself in quite a bit of credit card debt because I enjoyed going out and getting slashed up, didn't see the taxpayer queuing up to help me out!

If you want to be educated then you should pay for it!

If we're going to subsidize higher education then the subsidy should be paid on completion and based on how relevant the degree is to the job the person goes into.

That is stupid though. Why should two people doing the same job have to pay differing amounts of tax!?

Because the INCOME tax they pay would be the same assuming they were paid the same amount. The graduate may not have managed to get the job without the degree - maybe they would only of got to be a couple of grades lower ?

Surely one of the main complaints of the current system is the debt it leaves people in for years - a graduate tax would partly resolve this. To be frank I don't care which method is used - students need to understand that they need to pay more towards their optional education rather than expect the taxpayers to pick it up - many of whom haven't been to Uni.

Hi Barnham. Welcome to completely missing the point. Population: You.

I think you are.

The countries a busted flush thanks to the banks if you want to take it out on someone take it out on them and to a degree the last regime for spunking cash everywhere totaly unregulated and not even using the competetive contracts they set up.

We are all paying the price are students any different?

But what about those of us who didn't go to Uni but are paying EXACTLY the same higher tax rate as the graduates ? Surely they should pay something extra specifically towards the cost of their Uni education ?

That's the same as saying why should childless couples pay for other kids to have a primary and secondary education, why should healthy people pay for the sick, the infirm and the elderly etc.

A crass generalisation if ever there was one.

I've not heard a single coherent argument from students as to how their eduction should be funded.

All I hear is 'dummy out the pram' comments about how it used to be free years ago.

Well things have changed.

Firstly the country is nearly bankrupt. Secondly, in the 'good old days' only about 5% of people went to University and it was viewed as a privilege not a right. Today that figure is about 20%. From what I can see not too many of them go short of money for drink.

You have to remember that students are just grown up kids and have no real knowledge of the bigger issues.

OK so maybe we should abolish higher education altogether then? After all students have no common sense, drink too much and have not in any way contributed to the economy what-so-ever. Of course there isn't an argument that those with a good education help keep this country at the forefront of many international disciplines. Let's get rid of University all together and every can all 'work' for a living...or do an apprenticeship or something hands on.

I'm sure that'd see GB fly up the international ladder...

People should pay to go to Uni. Why should the tax payer have to foot the bill? most students spend their money on drink and drugs anyway. If female students need extra money they can become strippers or prostitutes to raise the extra cash.

I agree with this post.

I'd like to point out the fact it wasn't ever free years ago. Yes you were 'given' a grant, but when you left university (or polytechnic) you got a job and paid between 33p in the pound tax (late 70s, early 80s) reducing to 25p in the pound at the time of the introduction of student loans.

So, by all means I agree, introduce a graduate tax, all graduates to pay 25p in the pound income tax when they get a job.

mmm, I wonder how long before we have another riot of 'students' complaining that their taxes are too high?

Why don't we look at the employment trends of degrees over the last 15 years. See how many students have actually made decent use of their degrees. We could then weed out the pointless qualifications, or make business sponsor people to take them - if business want these degrees then they will pay. All the students who really should not be a Uni but are there because it's the next logical step in education (and therefore not working) would then be forced to actually face up to the fact that perhaps a degree in lighting and stage management is only going to be valid for a small handful of people and if they want to spend a few years farting about in theatres to get a qualification no-one wants, then they pay for the fucker.
