How the Rich Beat the Taxman

I did a stint volunteering at my local Citizens Advice for about 15 months, something I was very sorry to have to give up for work reasons, as it was one of the most worthwhile and fulfilling things I've ever done.

And if I had to point to one thing that surprised me from my time there (shows even I got hoodwinked by media coverage) it was that the vast number of people in there, many on benefits, were not work-shy fops looking to swindle the country as Osborne claims. The vast majority on Job Seekers Allowance were proud people who wanted to work, often had made a mess of things, and wanted to find the best way out and start over. These cases you read about in the papers, they were not the people walking througn the door.

So I'm afraid that I view the attack on benefit cheats as sounding tough about a problem that is vastly overstated (not saying it doesn't exist) and whipping up hatred towards a certain group, while deflecting attention from the fact that the wealthy are not paying their fair share.

Sounds fairly spot on.

thought there might be some interesting tips. but seems to just be an attack on current tory politians who've put money off shore or otherwise used the tax sytem to their benefit, the same way as anyone else can.

Not quite sure how Ralph Milliband is responsible for decades of house price inflation.
It was worth £340,000 when he died in 1994, not much of a f***ing marxist was he ? Nothing to say about the miliband brothers ' tax planning' i see , anyone would think that some of your socialist heroes like say, paul weller for instance , had been exposed as do as i say not as i do merchants ,utter ,utter f***ing hypocrites.

Sorry but I don't see the connection. He bought a house, raised his family in it (rather than speculating on it) and it was worth more when he died that when it was purchased due to factors mainly beyond his control. How does that make him a hypocrite ?

ok i'll give you a couple of clues, its very easy to advocate marxism for everyone else, when you personally have the wealth to afford a house that is worth £340,000, a lot of money now, let alone 1994,why didnt he live in social housing? , all property is theft etc etc and still no condemnation of the milbands tax avoidance either.

Dinner Ladies? probably not, as they'll be are on PAYE. White Van drivers? well if they are self-employed or contractors, quite possibly might be. you dont have to be rich to use an offshore account, i know people in IT, consultants and bouncers who get paid through offshore setups.

the program had nothing really to do with tax evasion or avoidance, but highlighting some hypocracy amongst some top tories. fair point too. however, i bet the reporter claims his flights, his lattes and a new laptop every year on expenses. everyone with the oppurtunity to avoid/minimise their tax does so.

If he'd have lived in social housing with the wealth he had, what would your response have been to that?

So will this twaddle bring about change, will the public take to the streets to protest, nope.

Ever since the human race started to pay taxes there have been dodgers from all walks of life, good on em.

Who is Ralph Miliband................presumably you mean Adolf Miliband?

When Adolf arrived in the UK penniless he stated in his diary that he went up to Highgate and stood in front of Marx's grave and swore an oath to the workers cause............maybe he did, he didn't swear the same oath as regards Marx's view on private property and ownership?

Indeed the Miliband estate may not have been all down to London house prices, Adolf also bought a country cottage in rural Oxfordshire.

Difficult to believe anything the Milibands have to say about tax avoidance either what with David's largesse on expenses and their mutual inheritance tax avoiding deed of variation to ensure Adolf's estate was not caught.

I particularly enjoy the irony of Adolf's Dad Sam serving in the Red Army that fought Poland in the 20's, funny how David didn't mention Grandpa Sam when he was crying about the Polish WW2 experiences in Warsaw last year.

It would have been hypocrite, same as now, what parts of confirmed marxist and man able to afford expensive primrose hill house are you having difficulty linkng with hypocrisy? having lots of money seems to be the antithesis of marxism to me i might not have agreed with dennis skinners politics , but he only ever took the national average wage and gave the rest to charity, thats a genuine bloke to me.

Ralph Miliband - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

as you can see this man was one of the leading social science academics of the 60's, 70's & 80's who wrote several books that were sold to generations of social science students.

What part do you think is hypocritical

a) that he used the fruit of his original thoughts to pay for a mortgage that by the time of his death had through inflation risen in value to £350,000. Something that was beyond his control.

b) he left this to his loved ones so that they wouldnt be homeless after his death.

I understand that you may resent his political ideas but to attack a man for trying to bring up his family as a hypocrite seems a bit small minded.

£123bn a year lost in evaded and uncollected tax in the UK. Invest in HMRC jobs and close the tax gap. No cuts required. Simples. But those who rule our society wouldn't benefit so they butcher our jobs, conditions, services and communities instead, all in the name of a financial crisis they created but refuse to pay for.

Don't worry folks! Tomorrow's swingeing cuts from the The Cleggeron Axis will soon result in the private sector hitting boom-time: thus ensuring full-time employment for all (including the terminally ill). Shortly, everybody will be reaping the benefits of the neo venture capitalists & the movers & the shakers, and we'll be able to pop a big wedge of our excess wad in offshore accounts. Then, once more, there'll be Bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover. Simples.

Agreed, just like 'trickle down', the main stay of the last Tory administration served the nation so well.
