You said you went out with NF. I find that hard to understand. Why would you, or anyone, go out with a known racist?

Back in the 70s & 80s there was a high percentage of people with racist views especially the eldery even parents, we all know relatives and people that have made comments which make them just as bad as being active as you say. Did you speak to them ? or say aaahhh they are elderly and from a dfferent time they dont know what they are on about !

Depends what you mean by racist really. I'd say half of middle England was racist only 50 years ago, in a casual kind of way. This is the whole problem with discussing racism - it doesn't seem to allow for any shades of grey which isn't a good thing.

Not really sure what your point is here PF? Big difference between the casual and ill-informed odd racist remark of my grand parent's generation, sadly long gone, to that of active membership of a well organised racist political party.

You are joking, right?

Not really, listen to yourself , imposing YOUR standards and views as gospel , what do you class as racist , someone like me who is pissed off at the 800,000 odd illegal immigrants that they have today admitted they've lost track of, god knows how many are really here , someone like me who sees absolutely no benefit whatsoever in the huge amount of african immigration into this country in the last 15 years ? Someone like me who sees large parts of our inner cities and mill towns turned into mini versions of pakistan or bangladesh ? I'm just sick of people like you decreeing what we are allowed to think and say and woe betide anyone , such as charlies shinpad who stray from the accepted doctrine of such experts as yourself no-one in their right mind condones racist attacks and all the rest of it , but i'm not going to be bullied into keeping silent about my views because peopl,e like you deem them unnaceptable , we've even had posters on this thread declaring " what a wanker i was back then " , no he wasnt , he behaved by what was acceptable as the standards of the time .

I would say over half had racist tendencies only 30 odd years ago.

Remarkably my old man was what most people would call a racist, he would never have been violent or abusive to black people but he sure didn't like them. Funny thing is though, our sister moved to Kenya in 1990 and he and mum went out to see her, he came back a changed man.

Yes Searchlight have done valuable undercover work and if Charlie's Shinbad was working undercover in this capacity whilst shagging the local branch secretary of the National Front, I'll hold my hands up. But somehow I doubt it.

There's a huge difference between coming into contact and rebuffing the NF at football and gigs and dating them. Wouldn't you say?

Call me old fashioned but I choose not to date people who are active in racist political parties. That's a choice we all had, even back then.

Spanish, thanks for the book tip but I don't need any lessons on these issues.

its the cocksure certainty from both sides in this daft marginal battle that i have always found unnerving

The point is in the 70s and early 80s people did even if you dont care to believe me or not, join these groups on a social level. People also joined dare I say it to be "cool" and it was dare I say it the "fashion" be it youth culture or indoctrination. These people may not have believed any of it and grew out of it and who knows that person may well have gone onto distance themselves and done good work in the community and even married into a diffrent race or background.

Like it or not there was an element of danger which attracted youths to these groups without the thought of what they were actually doing and for that reason we should not judge someone because they said they went out with them not knowing the outcome. It is very easy to question someones past on todays principles.

It was only quite recently that racist shouts from individuals stopped. There was never any massive racism among the general Albion support as far as I can remember. I do remember some dodgy songs and monkey stuff but nothing like on the scale displayed by certain other teams support.

No point getting all unneccessary about the 70 s though..everyone was racist in those days. Schools were full of it and there was a fair bit of it put on as entertainment on the TV. Love thy neighbour, til death do us part, rising damp etc. also comedians of the day used racist language all the time.

If you read what I said, you'll see I didn't say you joined the NF, nor anything about banning anyone.

How old are you?

During the 80s I marched and even raised fists against the NF. I was at Uni (York St John not THE Uni) in York and confrontations with our very red student union was pretty much a regular occurence

BUT

I remember the monkey chants, zigger zagger and brown girl in the ring (though I really didnt know the racist bits as I was about 12 at the time) amd although I felt uncomforable (again this was when I was 10-14) I was the one who was different.

And lets be honest for a good shag you didnt really have political discussions. At least I didnt.

I wouldve thought if youd have been around then youd have known that.

But then again, maybe you were different too.

I used to find the old West stand at the Goldstone the worst when it came to monkey noises. I remember John Chidosie of Orient and then Spurs fame getting terrible abuse. Mind you even the Spurs fans used to sing, "We've a brown boy on the wing, la la la la la" to that Boney M tune.

they werent under pressure from immigration. its difficult to be a really active racist if you have no one to be racist towards regularly.

This is true. But by that measure racism should be rampant in B&H now as there are loads of immigrants in town now.

I recall vividly my nan nearly crashing the car when she spotted a black bloke in Worthing.

How am I "imposing" my views or telling anyone what to think? I'm simply having my say. But if you think it's ok to date people who are racist - who think that one group of people is inferior to another simply because of the colour of their skin, that's your call. But I think you're wrong and I'm entitled to say so on a public forum. If you don't like it, well tough, it's democracy.

hmm only up to a point. There are no real blocs of communities forming and no real signs of that happening anytime soon which is very unusual for a large town in the UK nowadays. a few polish girls selling ice cream on the pier is not mass migration.

hahaha though i can imagine plenty in worthing would still almost crash the car if they saw a black person there.

By hysterically asking CS if his post was a "sick joke" , and following up by asking if it was " ok to date racists" in an obviously disapproving way , with the inference that any answer that didnt meet with your approval would be wrong.
