How racist were albion fans in the 70's

Remember in the late 70's the North Stand singing to opposing teams black players "There's some black shit on the pitch la la la la la" (sung to the tune of Brown girl in the ring, by Boney M).

:nono:

Sung in response to Palace's Vince Hilaire song "There's a brown boy on the wing, tra la la la la".

Incidentally, "Brown girl in the ring" is a Jamaican folk song.

Is this some kind of sick joke? You went out with someone who was a racist then tell everyone about it on here, saying you used to play football with them. And then if that was not bad enough you then say they still go to the Albion?

Says a lot about you.

you dont know that the fellas not an active anti fascist now mate. as this thread proves things were very very different then. Why not ask a few more questions first? As this thread is proving there was a lot of it about and I dont remember seeing many people walk out in protest at the time. Just goes to show its easy to be very very principled when there is a massive following wind behind you.

is your responsesome kind of sick joke ?? how can you possibly not post a hysterical reaction that would embarass a 17 year old 6th former if it wasnt coated in the protective cloak of anti racism ?

Jesus Christ, some of the stuff on this thread is genuinely quite shocking.

It was the sign of those times, the skinhead culture was massive, it bred a very nasty football element, but even in general life, and going to gigs was an experience, skinheads were everywhere.

Sneaky George should read Hate by Matthew Collins. If you want to solve a problem you first have to understand it.

well said that man Mr Spanish.

I came into contact with alot of NF & C18 people when I was younger due to gigs and music venues and alternative pubs I went too. Yes they tried to indoctinate us and me, but I am clever enough to see through the bullshit, and fundamentally know that it was and is wrong. Just because you come into contact with them or even speak or meet them at a social event does not mean that you believe or agree with them. Also some of the best undercover work searchlight has done to expose the nationalist ideology has been done by ex members of these groups. The worst kind of racism is nearly allways commited by people who do not acknowledge they have a problem and ignore the problem on a subconscious level. We dont know this man or his reasons and his life at the time, Sneaky George does not even know if this guy is white or black as there are and have been black members of these groups, my bet is he is not but life is strange.

there were a lot of morons around then , there are plenty around now................there are teams in europe who absolutely refuse to employ "international" players.......this is hard-core racism.......don't think there are that many hard-core racists in southern england any more.....plenty of morons though.

Did I say I joined the NF ???? Well I didn't
I went out with the girl and she was that way inclined to Racism and I wasn't
I played footie with the lads because it was a kick about on a Sunday morning
And are you saying all Ex members of NF should be banned from football grounds because if their beliefs 30 odd years ago ???

Jesus Christ, some of the stuff on this thread is genuinely quite shocking.

But that was the point it didn't seem shocking at the time, well not to the majority anyway,as far as the anl and n f marches were concerned the a n l seemed to be students and the n f were 20 or so bosun skinheads, just an excuse for a dust up down the level i think???

Yes Searchlight have done valuable undercover work and if Charlie's Shinbad was working undercover in this capacity whilst shagging the local branch secretary of the National Front, I'll hold my hands up. But somehow I doubt it.

There's a huge difference between coming into contact and rebuffing the NF at football and gigs and dating them. Wouldn't you say?

Call me old fashioned but I choose not to date people who are active in racist political parties. That's a choice we all had, even back then.

Spanish, thanks for the book tip but I don't need any lessons on these issues.

If you read what I said, you'll see I didn't say you joined the NF, nor anything about banning anyone.
You said you went out with NF. I find that hard to understand. Why would you, or anyone, go out with a known racist?

I recall the North Stand regularly starting the song:

Hey ho the red light's flashing,
We're going ni**er bashing.

Along with a few choice others and at the time I gladly joined in, what a wanker I was back then.

Because back then it was not really considered to be that bad, as utterly shocking as that sounds now.

because he fancied her ?and didnt/doesnt attach the same level of importance to someones views as your hysterical reaction implies ?

The NF were a well-known and actively racist party back then, everyone knew that.

Yes they did, it's the racism part that wasn't considered to be that bad, I went along with loads of the singing assuming it was just name calling, then I grew up.
