And at the risk of sounding really controversial, can I also point out it is actually possible to like both The Who AND The Doors.

I do.

I like Free too...

Agreed. Although The Doors are overated IMO. Not helped by that shite film with Val Kilmer. 5 or 6 great tracks though. Using The End at the end of Apocalypse Now is one of the great music cinematic moments. When the Music's Over is a great song, and love it or loathe it, Light My Fire is a deceent pop tune. However be careful getting into dodgy lyric battles TLO. Much as I love the Who, Townsend wasn't adverse to some pretty poor writing in the 60's.

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

One - provided they can be bothered to get out of the bath.

35 years ago today Jim Morrison died. Vastly over-rated group in my opinion - a fairly standard west-coast blues group with a decent organ player who managed to inspire a handful of decent songs. As for Morrison's 'poetry' - f***ing stroll on, per-lease.

Definitely a triumph of marketing over content.

Can't disagree with that at all.. made 4 good songs in total. The rest were dire at best...

But every song lyric can be made to look a bit daft when written out or can be made to sound very silly by being read out in a sniffy voice - they've been doing it on Late Review for years.

"So, what's this: when you're WEARY, feeling SMALL, when tears are in your eyes, I will DRY them ALL?!?! Ha ha, well Mark, that's just complete sixth form doggerel from Simon and Garfunkel isn't it?"
