The only pet that you need to leave to somebody in your will ........ they live soooooo long :yahoo:

When I was about 11 my mate had a Tortoise called "Tonto" which I've always tought was great name (it's probably still alive after 45 years)

My daughter has one (that actually lives in my back garden as she doesn'y have a garden) and it's called Zamora - we could probably change its name 'cos it doesn't respond when we call it!

Have you considered a terrapin?

Just like a tortoise ... only it eats meat and SWIMS.

They go CRAZY in a bath of warm water. But you can switch them off by finding a cold, dark corner. If it's cold enough, they'll stay there for DAYS until you want to get them out for more FUN.

We had one when I lived in Hove. The old ladies used to love it when we took it down the pub.

My nan had one and I seem to remember it was pretty easy to look after. The tricky bit is spring time when there's always that puzzler.... dead, or still hibernating?

Probably best not to bury it for a couple of weeks, just in case.

Our tortoise is only 5 years old
It lives in the garden in the summer and in the house on a heat mat in the winter. We only hibernate it for 6 weeks as it is too young for a full hibernation. We put in in a box and then in a plastic container with holes in and shove it in the loft. After 6 weeks we have to wake it, then it just mooches around our downstairs for the winter. It doesn't eat much but it like the sticks you have to put in water, apple and cooked broccolli. thats about it.
We bought a little house thing with a ramp and filled with straw and dirt and now pretty much lives in there. Easy pet really!!!

Terrapins are NOT a great idea. They need a heated aquarium with very good filteration. They can bite and boy does it hurt and they carry salmonella and lots of other nasties. If you don't have the proper conditions for them, they will f***ing stink....and i mean "walk into the room and instant vomit" type stink !!!!

Tortoises are much easier to keep. If you get a small one, they won't need hibernating for a few years. They ain't cheap though but there's loads of local breeders.

A friend of mine has 5 of our shelled friends. He tells me that their shells are not as hard as people might think. In fact he says that their shells are quite soft. Also some people do keep them in the fridge over winter but not the one in the kitchen with all your food in.

I always remember the Blue Peter tortoise. Every winter they would spend the best part of one programme popping Freda (I think) into a box and into Percy's shed for a few months. At Xmas it was the advent crown.

Freda (I think)

Indeed. It was Fred for a long while when they first got it. Then eventually someone bothered to check and discovered it was actually a lady - so they painted an 'A' after her name on the shell...
