here hare here
Speed depends on :
1. distance from exchange
2. shite wiring in your house
3. type of cable between exchange and premises (copper good, ali no so good)
4. contention ratio (how many other uses are sharing the DSLAM usage)
l

this is a big factor and something you might be able to do something about. you really need to connect your modem to the phone jack closest to the entrance point to your house (meaning the phone line, not the front door).

i wired up a phone extension in my house - works fine for the phone but when i connect my modem to that jack i get about a 60% reduction in download speed.

Agree with the last post, house wiring makes a big difference. I gave myself an extra 2Mbps recently by following the instructions on this website:

http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/broadbandspeed.html

If you're using a shit extension lead it can kill your speeds. Going on advice from that website I pulled the middle two pins from the extension lead and it definitely made a difference. I also pulled the bellwire out of the BT master socket, and that's where my extra 2Mbps came from. Well worth a look

Which is actually FASTER than BT said it would be, so I'm happy! I am in London and in an almost brand new flat though, which I'm sure helps.

3880 Kbps download
371 Kbps upload.

That's the BT phone system out our way - it still runs on clockwork, I think.

BT claim we can get 5.5Mbps by switching to BT Business Broadband.

We already have.
