I understand why it should be pronounced Amex as in ham(because of the American Express) but it should be pronounced Amex as in a Mexican as Albumen has already said

but if it is to be called Amex as in ham it should have a double m...............Ammex

Amex is short of course for American Express, so how do you pronounce "American"? Therefore it should surely be option 2, pronounced "Am Ex".

It is not a single word - there is no such word as Amex, it is an abbreviation for American Express. Hence the sign at our wonderful new stadium states "American Express Community Stadium" not "Amex Community Stadium".

This used to really wind me up when I worked there. Even some of my ex-colleagues used to pronounce it A-Mex

I worked on the 1st Floor in Edward Street 1977-1978 and we used to say "AYMEX" , I was a lowly batch control clerk in the DAYTA processing department.
