How do you feel about England now

After the relatively barren years of " The Golden Generation" we really can't expect as much from the likes of Cleverly,Milner, Welbeck and the others. We were lucky to make quarter finals with better players than these. Yes, people will puff Wilshere and Rodwell and other youngsters but we all know what happens, cruciate or hamstring injuries and they are never quite the same again. Those that don't get injured fail to develop or push on technically, for all his running and snarling, Wayne Rooney has not developed as a player.

Best not to have any hopes other than qualifying, and even then, with a few hiccups like last night.

The term world class is thrown around like confetti in the UK these days. A minority of posters on this site have stated Jack Wilshire is world class. A significant number claim Rooney is world class. I think some followers of football really need to open their eyes at times.

It drives me mad. This liberal use of ' great ' and ' world class ' Where else is there to go after you use these terms?
If you call Rooney or Gerrard world class, what do you call Messi or Ronaldo? I heard a caller to Talksport recently refer to Rooney as a genius!!!
I can only put it down to lack of experience and football knowledge. If you've watched Pele, Garrincha, Best, Cruyff, Charlton, Beckenbauer, Platini, Maradona, Zidane and Ronaldo ( Brazil ) then you tend not to go overboard about most other players. This talent only appears very occasionally and should be treasured and respected. There are only a select few who have earned the right to be called ' great ' or ' world class ' Most of these have been instrumental in helping their country win the games highest honour...the World Cup. Cruyff, Best and Platini didn't but I defy anyone to tell me these weren't great players.
By all means use terms such as ' top club player ' or ' decent international player' but please, please, please leave ' great ' and world class ' and ' genius ' to those that deserve it.

The England national side are just dull, there is nothing to get excited about at all. Thankfully the makeup of the side is becoming less odious but it is pretty devoid of any real talent at the moment. I cannot believe how disinterested was in our Euro 2012 campaign, I really couldn't give a stuff use frankly.

I hope we qualify for the World Cup and will no doubt get caught up in the hype if we do but we are really are distinctly average the best British player by a mile is Welsh which says it all really.

Came home to me that I've lost all interest last weekend and last night. Last weekend I resented the international break because I wanted the next Albion game to come as soon as possible.

Last night I got home from work late and I hadn't even registered England were playing. The date had entirely escaped me, and I wasn't that bothered. In fact I wasn't bothered at all. Ten years ago that would never have happened.

Something very similar happened to me as I'd agreed to go to the cinema last night to see Argo but then remembered the England game was on. After weighing up the dilemma for many seconds I decided to go to the cinema anyway. As it turns out neither had a surprise ending!

Up until last night I'd never understood why ITV insisted on showing highlights of England games 30 minutes or so after having shown the whole thing live but last night I realised it was for those of us who are interested but really can't be bothered to devote that much time to it anymore. I suspect I may be taking advantage of the highlights programme again in the future.

First and foremost I'm a Brighton fan, because The Albion is a part of me.

Then if we are talking about time committed to said sport through TV and the written word, soccerball is a long way down behind the likes of:-

American Football, Cricket, Rugby, horse racing, maybe even basketball.

As predicted the spirit of the Olympics is long gone.
Given the choice I'd have probably watched competitive GB performances in canoeing, rowing, shooting, archery, boxing and so on, before I turned to football.

Similar to me. I'm a Brighton fan and always will be. I will always find time for the Albion but the rest of my leisure time is dominated by many other things which I hold a passion for.

I just get so very dissapointed and frustrated watching England. we keep having this...xxxx player is world class etc etc and we are all led to believe this to be true. Maybe they are world class, but only with the likes of the foreign players around them...Take lescott. Dont get me wrong, he is a decent player...but for City he looks a world beater with Toure, Clichy, kolerov etc etc around him. That is the difference.

as I say, its just sheer frustration and last night was the epitome of England performances....score...miss a hatful of chances...be told at half time we are doing well...the opposition batter us for the second half and wrong subs are made when it was screaming out that lampard should have come on for Cleverly and Defoe for Wellbeck.

Little expectation of us reaching the final stages so for some years have only watched full match if it was a poor TV evening,listening to many experts prior to the match suggesting we were going to have problems with last nights opponents resulted in just watching the highlights,good decision.

England are over-hyped. I recall Alan Shearer for the BBC during the 2006 world cup saying that he would struggle to put any Portuguese player ahead of any of the England starting 11 at the time. This statement was made a few days after Portugal had knocked us out.

I enjoy watching RTE's football coverage with Eamon Dunphy, Liam Brady etc. The Irish analysis is better and more entertaining. They're always rolling around when our media hype us up everytime we qualify for a major tournament and repeatedly fall short. The Republic of Ireland are average but at least they're realistic regarding their potential.

I try ever so hard not to have a passion for the England team. I think that the players don't really care about the team, certainly not as much as the fans, their attitude stinks, they are petty and self centred and exceptionally arrogant. I can take or leave the group games and do not really care that much about qualification. However, and this is the odd thing, if we do qualify for the major tournaments I do then start to care. Don't get me wrong, my expectations are rock bottom, but for some reason I cannot help but get excited and always make sure that I watch the big games.

I guess that I love the shirt, but not the people wearing it.

Totally agree 100%. England actually have no World class players at the moment. Rooney and Gerrard at one time in their careers were world class i.e would get in a World XI but not now. A good indicator, I think, of truly how good an England player is when International managers/jounalists etc list their best XI after World Cups/Euros/Ballon D'Or's/Champs League etc and English players (that we are told are great) don't get in them. If they are as good as Sky/Talksport/Jamie Redknapp/Ray Wilkins etc. say they are why don't they get into these teams

Talking of TalkSport I have heard that tool Darren Gough once say that Rooney was better than Messi, how deluded is that.

We were talking on another thread last week about Rooney, and I ended up defending him. He's the only England player who looks like he's going to score every time he takes the field, but he is typical of so many of the Golden Generation in that he's come up short on the big stage so many times before.

The choice seems to be:

a) Play the old guard - Johnson, Cashley, Rio, Stevie G, Lampard, Rooney - and know that you'll qualify
b) Start afresh but there's a pretty good chance you won't qualify
c) Blend the two and keep your fingers crossed for the Montenegro game at home.

Hodgson has gone for Option c), but his selections indicate he rates Johnson above Walker, Cashley above Baines, Rio above Smalling, and last night was an indicator Lampard is better than Cleverley. I'd also add that Crouch looked better than Wellbeck, while like so many before him Ashley Young believes the hype and thinks he's Thierry Henry. Mentally, he's finished.
