[Politics] How do you deal with people obsessed with political views?

I’m really interested in politics and have always loved an informed political debate.

The problem I’ve found, particularly since Brexit, is that most people in this country can only think in extremes. “Ahhh, you’re a communist”, or “ahh, you’re a Nazi”.

I blame social media, in the main, and the fact that many will allow themselves to be blinded by fact, simply because they hold one prejudice or another.

So the best response generally, is to not get involved. I find that the only person who loses out when I do, is me.

That’s roughly my view too. Our politics are not as broken as they are in the US but we are more polarised than ever before and it’s getting worse as certain topics bring out kneejerk responses from both, or all, sides. You get it on here too. You can hear the rage in people when they JUST CAN NOT F**KING UNDERSTAND WHY other people can’t share the monolithic, non-negotiable truth that they’re putting in front of them, the STUPID BIGOTED BASTARDS. My only response is to put the worst of the discussions on ignore. I probably miss some interesting exchanges but I certainly miss a load of pointless bickering too, so I’m happy with that.

Obviously if he's left wing, agree and ask him to expand his argument. If he's right wing, tell him he's wrong and you don't want to hear another word from his stupid mouth.

The last political conversation I had with an idiot in real life was a neighbour who voted Brexit.

A few years ago I asked him if he was looking forward to anything in the New Year?

He said

“Yeah, getting rid of all the EU stuff”

Like what?

“All the rules”

Which ones in particular?

“The bloody EU rules”

I just said that I can’t have this conversation and changed the subject.

No hard feelings on either side.

An opposite situation is my mate Dave. He's politically obsessed but knows nothing of football. He decided about 20 odd years ago that when people talk football at him and ask who he supports he says 'I'm a life long Man United fan!' Then relies on the two or three Man Utd snippets he's heard over the proceeding days/months/years.

You could have real fun with this. For every looney tinfoil hat topic he launches into, come up with something even more ridiculous and blatantly nonsense, then act surprised and aggrieved if he questions it. And just keep at it, don’t let up or admit you’re playing a game - go all in.

I think I would struggle to out nonsense him! His reading material on holiday was a David Icke book so just waiting for him to bring up the lizard people!

Politics are important they decide your economic and social happiness i.e. how much money you have in your pocket, so people should discuss more and be better informed about reality rather than leave it to emotion. Perhaps the issue is not discussing politics but just presentation of biased views.

I don't get into debates but I find single answers/retorts is far more cutting than arguing with these people. Had a guy from work say "I'm so glad trump won. Shuts up the lefty woke MSM"

It might be that those who didn't vote Labour in the last election have accepted their fate and that the current cabal will drive us to whatever hell in the next few years.
Bleating on about something that happened 8 years ago does indeed border on the obsessive.
