How are You Going to LISTEN To The Commentary Now Hart and Hawesy Have Been SUSPENDED

totally fine. just it seems to me your threads on it are designed to provoke a reaction hence the whole thing snowballing, I actually think you'd be quite good hosting the show

there wouldnt be a point in starting a thread if there was only one answer, I like discussions, difference of opinions etc. Thats what makes this board so good. But this whole thing did go over the top and has lead to someone I have met, and liked loosing his job.

As for me hosting it, I dont think I will have the toungue for it if Harty didnt:)

At the end of the day, this all comes down to standards and what people think is acceptable:

On here, there is a great devide on what is acceptable. I know people who support the Albion who have disabled children, children with Downs Syndrome, people whose children belong to the Seagulls Specials. They do not come on here as there are people on here who think it acceptable to post pictures which they and probably most of us think highly offensive and upsetting. BUT that is the internet in a nutshell. Its deregulated. Anything goes. People are happy to be racists, sexist etc etc

However the flip side of that is the highly regulated public broadcasting services where there are guidelines that must be adhered to. harty and Hawsey fell foul of taking what is said on here and repeating it on the BBC. People were offended, angered, and took their right to contact the BBC and complain.

Do you remember Danny baker being taken off the BEEB when after a dive by a Chelsea was picdked up on the telly and on his show 606, some bloke came on trying to justify the dive...baker says." Get this idiot off the radio"....bang...Danny baker is then sacked!!!!

I work for an American company and their version of what constitutes a joke amazes me. The bottom line is, you want to keep your job, you keep your personal opinions and beliefs to yourself.

I reiterate, I have no axe to grind here....if Harty is permanently suspended, then that is me not getting a change to be on the radio, which I really enjoy......" thank f*** for that " I hear you say! I think Harty as a radio host is excellent and SCR will be the poorer without him, as will the Albion fans

jesus christ this is a prime example of PC gone mad. How one comment that was made in the heat of the moment, and that was even apologised for minutes later has gone so far is crazy. Harty obviously does a lot for various charities that are related to the albion and to lose his job would be an absoulute disgrace.

Why do people feel the need to make official complaints? Have they got nothing better to do than report someone for a slip of the tongue. Pathetic. Yes, it was a comment that looking back was wrong, and there was an apology, couldn't people leave it there? This is the same BBC that put little britain on prime time TV which takes the piss out of various groups of people and is there to be laughed at.

I doubt very much that the views of Mencap and Scope in relation to this Teacup tornado can be taken seriously.

"Hello Mencap..how can I help?"

"Good morning, I'm calling from the Argus, I wonder if you would like to comment on the remarks made by two BBC presenters during the Brighton phone in last night?"

"What comments?"

"Well during the show the presenters started referring to their listeners as "window lickers", I just wondered if that term would be considered offensive by Mencap?"

"Why yes it is! thank you for bringing this outrage to our attention because otherwise we would have been completely unaware of it, of course we will give you a quote on how remarks such as this are deeply offensive and the need for any sort of context is obviously not necessary"

That is undoubtedly how it went. BUT just because they were not aware of it being said does not mean they cannot be offended when they do hear about it does it?

I remember doing a story about a pie shop in Hastings which had the sign 'No windowlickers' on the window. People went mental about it. I think it is a touchy phrase and one anyone going on the radio should know they should not be using.

Nowhere is it suggested that Mencap complained. Mencap commented on the story when the Argus approached them.

Sorry, but have read the article and cannot see where it says Mencap only commented after being approached by the Argus.

fair enough, must admit I only read the story once. I did wonder why a spokesman from Mencap would be listening to Brighton vs Orient in the Johnstone Paint 2nd round :)

Why? Aren't Mencap representatives not allowed to support the Albion. How do you know a disabled albion supporter didn't advise Mencap themselves.

Some interesting points here so I think I'll throw my hat into the ring.

First and foremost, I don't accept the suggestion there will be no commentary tomorrow. Surely they would draft someone in from another region or get in whoever does the Surrey opt-out coverage. Failing that it could be the big promotion for one of the bods who cover the Eastbourne, Crawley and Lewes games. I'd imagine 3-5pm on a Saturday is one of their biggest pulls. They're not going to let that drop.

Now, as for the suspensions. Sorry to go against the grain but I think the BBC has got it right. First and foremost, I think Harty is a legend. I don't need to repeat all the things he has done for the club and , of course, he produced what I (maybe biasedly) regard as the finest fanzine in football history. And in that fanzine, it was his right to speak to and about people however he wanted.

Working for the BBC is a different kettle of fish. He is working for a public service broadcaster and to that extent has to remain professional. If we're going to let it go, should we let Huw Edwards refer to Zimbabwean farmers attacking farms as "Niggers on the rampage"? Should we start referring to "paki shiops"? Why didn't Harty just go the whole hog and refer to people as "spastics" rather than just window lickers. I'm sorry but that's the way it is. Yes, it probably was a slip of the tongue made in anger and frustration but it still shouldn't have happened. And I have no idea what Hawesy was doing repeating it. Maybe he was a bit fazed but he should definitely have known that it was not acceptable. Say it in the pub, email it to your mates but don't say it live on the radio. It's pretty simple really.

However, the punishment should fit the crime and hopefully the BBC will see sense and a severe reprimand will be dished out and they'll be back on the air soon. Assuming it was an unfortunate, embarrassing slip of the tongue. It shouldn't have happened but it certainly wasn't part of a vitriolic diatribe. Hopefully both will be able to consider that and just be a little bit more careful next time. What people think and how they choose to label disabled people, ethnic minorities and the like is up to them but I don't think the BBC is really the place it should be coming out. Accidental or not.

Best post on this thread.

Two points. Firstly, are you suggesting it is ok to offend people accidently? Secondly, people make official complaints to change things. Making things official is not a waste of someone times but you don't seem to have any problem with using your time comment on this forum, what's the difference?

I am not a great fan of the phone in as most of the callers seem to talk a load of rubbish. What should happen is that Harty will be banned for a few weeks and then brought back in. John Byrne could probably fill the role in the meantime.

I'm not saying that the BBC read NSC and decided to sack a radio presenter. I'm saying that someone read NSC and got sufficiently fired up about things to complain direct to the BBC - who then acted.

Charity spokespeople are notoriously humourless bores. The people they speak for often aren't. I know disabled people who refer to going to group sessions as 'hanging out with the other raspberry ripples'. Whatever the rights and wrongs of what was said, and that is hugely subjective, it just fucks me right off that such a big deal is made of things like this.
